IMPROVEMENT IN CANOPIED CHAIRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,521, dated November 11, 1673; application filed August 23, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, THOMAS ELKINTON, of the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a Canopied Chair, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to protect the occupant of a sea-side or lawn chair from the rays of the sun; and this object I accomplish f by combining` an awning or canopy, A, with a chair, B, constructed with standards a a1 for the support of the said canopy, as shown in the perspective view, Fig. l, of the accompanying drawing.
My invention is represented in the present instance as applied to a folding or camp-chair, consisting of two crossed frames pivoted together at b b, the seat d, arms e e, and back f being of fabric, and the standards a al for the support of the canopy being simple extensions or continuations of the said crossed frames.
The front standards a1 are not absolutely essential in carrying out my invention, and may be dispensed with; but in' such case it would forward from their points of connection with the canopy, which could readily be accom# plished if the said standards were of metal.
In the modification shown in Fig. 2 the canopy might -be hinged to its supporting standards, so as to be folded down upon the same 4 when not required for use.
I claim as my invention- The combination, with a chair, of a canopy, the support of which constitutes part of the structure of the chair, all substantially as set forth.
