This invention relates to hammocks for domestic use; and it consists in certain novel features of construction, as hereinafter set forth and claimed.

An objection to hammocks as ordinarily constructed is that they do not give that comfortable position to the body and lower limbs which is necessary to insure perfect relaxation and rest. VV ith the feet upon the hammock a person lying therein on the back is subjected to a strain on that portion of the limbs back of the knees which is very disagreeable and retards the circulation of the blood or causes the limbs to go to sleep. In order to re lax such strain, a man may let his legs hang over the sides of the hammock; but this position is out of the question for women and children and aifords only temporary relief.

The leading object of the present invention is to permit the limbs to assume a natural restful position within the hammock itself.

Other objects of the invention are to provide a distinct leg-rest pocket for each foot of the occupant in hammocks intended for men and in all cases to inelose the leg-rest at the foot end of the hammock, so as to prevent the exposure of the limbs of the occupant and to utilize such closure of the foot end. of the legrest as a suiiicient support for its depressed portion, so as to obviate the employment of supplemental supporting devices.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of an improved hammock, illustrating the present invention. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal sec tion through one of the leg-rests, and Fig. 3 represents an enlargement of a portion of Fig. 2.

The body portion will usually be formed, as heretofore, of a suitable woven fabric,'and the supports B and C may consist of the customary ropes, converging to clevises or rings 1 and 2, by which the hammock is suspended. For the purposes of the present invention said body portion A is provided near its foot end with longitudinal oval openings 3 and 4 side by side, beneath each of which a leg-rest D, practically or literally integral with said body Each of these leg-rests .1) comprises an inclined bottom portion 5, Fig. 2, merging into and extending downwardly from the surface of the body of the hammock, an end portion 6, substantially at right angles to said bottom portion, and triangular side portions 7, securely united to each other along their adjoining edges. If said leg-rests D be formed mainly by pieces of fabric attached to the main body A of the hammock, as represented in the drawings, longitudinal strips 8 and 9 of said main body portion are preferably and conveniently carried into the leg-rest and securely attached to its main fabrie,so as to serve as stays. The edges where the leg-rest .l) unites with the main body portion A are also preferably and conveniently reinforced by a continuous binding 10, and said bindings are provided at the wider ends of the openings 3 and 4 in the body portion A above the end portions 6 of the leg-rests with elastic stiffeners 11, Fig. 3, of steel, celluloid, or any suitable material, serving as spreaders to keep said openings from closing. By making such spreaders elastic rolling or doubling up the hammock is not interfered with.

By providing a pair of the leg-rests D, as shown in Fig. l, the occupant of the hammock may be enabled to balance himself or herself in the customary manner, and thus be aflorded a sense of as much security as with the feet entirely free.

There may be but one leg-rest (of double width) instead of two, if preferred, and other like modifications will suggest themselves. to those skilled in the art.

Having thus described said improvement, I claim as my invention and desire to patent under this specification l. A hammock constructed with a leg-rest depending from the main body of the hammock and closed at its foot end.

2. A hammock constructed with a leg-rest depending from the main body of the hammock and closed at the foot end, the whole substantially integral with the main body.

3. A hammock constructed with a pair of depending leg-rests arranged longitudinally side by side near the foot end of the main body of the hammock and having portions by which the foot end of each is closed.

4. A hammock constructed with a pair of depending leg-rests closed at the foot end of each, arranged longitudinally side by side near one end of the main body of the hammock and substantially integral with said main body.

5. In a hammock, a depending leg-rest arranged longitudinally near one end of the main body of the hammock, and comprising an inclined .bottom portion extending downwardly from the surface of said main body, and an end portion substantially at right angles to said bottom portion, said end portion serving to close the foot end of the leg-rest.

6. In ahammock, a depending leg-rest arranged longitudinally near the foot end of the main body of the hammock, and comprising an inclined bottom portion extending downwardly from the surface of said main body and an end portion substantially at right anmain body of the hammock, beneath an open- 7 ing in the latter, said leg-rest comprising an inclined bottom portion extending downwardly from the surface of said main body and an end portion substantially at right angles to said bottom portion, said opening being provided above said end portion with a spreader to keep the same from closing.

9. In a hammock, a depending leg-rest arranged longitudinally near the foot end of the main body of the hammockbeneath an opening in the latter, said leg-rest comprising an inclined bottom portion extending downwardly from the surface of said main body, and an end portion substantially at right angles to said bottom portion, said opening being provided above said end portion with an elastic spreader to keep the same from closing, substantially as hereinbefore specified.
