UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SHERMAN COOPER, OF VVESTFIELD, NE? JERSEY.
SUSPENSORY BANDAGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 366,931, dated July 19, 1887.
Application tiled October 16, 1886. Serial No. llfiAlG. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SHERMAN COOPER, of XVestfield, in the county ofUnion and the State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Snspensory Bandages, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the aecompanying drawing.
This invention relates to bandages for supporting the scrotum and its contents, to prevent dragging or undue weight upon the spermatic cord, and for such purpose of treatment of these parts as these bandages are ordinarily used for.
Heretofore bandages of this kind have consisted of bags separately constructed from the garments of the wearer, and supported upon the person of the wearer by means of straps or similar devices passing around the body or limbs or removabl y attaching to some article of wear.
The object, therefore, of the invention is to obviate the use of special straps or hands for securing the suspensory to the person of a wearer, and, while providing a means for supporting, at the same time isolating the organs supported, when requisite, from the adjoining parts of the wearers person more fully than is possible with the common form of such devices.
The invention consists of a suspensory bag or pocket permanently attached to and made a part of a garment for wear in such a position and manner that it can be availed of as a suspensory when the garment is used, the garment that most conveniently would be used for this purpose being the drawers.
The drawing represents the upper or hip parts of a pair of drawers provided with abag or pocket made in accordance with the purpose ot the invention.
In the view, A represents the suspensory device, which consists of any suitable fabric or other material made into a bag-like form. This bag will ordinarily be made of the same material as the drawers, being designed and cut out therewith, and being fitted and permanently secured thereto at the time they are made. I prefer to make this bag of aseparate piece of the same material as the drawers, and to secure it to the middle scam at the bottom of the fly, substantially as shown. \Vhen thus made, the suspensory is on the outside of the drawers, and the parts supported are held well away from the legs of the wearer and not bound up and held against the person of the wearer by the drawers. In cases where special isolation is not required the bag may hang within the drawers.
Vhen demanded by special cases, the supporting-bag may be of other material than the material of the drawers. It may also be provided with an opening for the penal organ, though the fly of the drawers is intended for this purpose. Other changes are possible, but not necessary to be here described, as they do not change the principle of the invention.
\Vhat is elai med as new is A garment provided with a suspensory bag or support, said bag being permanently attached to and forming a part of the garment, substantially as described.
