IMPROVEMENT IN BRACKET-LAMPS Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l59,74?, dated February 16, 1875; application filed November 21, 1874.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GLEARMONT V. BEST, of Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bracket or Scroll Lamps for Burning Oils; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip tion of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 represents, in perspective, one of my bracket or scroll lamps with a portion represented as broken away to show the interior. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal section taken through the same.

I am aware that hollow arms or brackets have been used in connection with an oilrreceptacle behind the hinge-joint of the bracket or at one side of the hollow arm or bracket, and separate from the bracket. To such bracket lamps or burners I lay no claim.

My invention consists in the combination of an oil-containing arm, hinge, and wall-fastening of a bracket-lamp with a bearer fastened and supported in an interior brace-piece in the bracket and in the turning-piece of the hinge, as will be explained.

To enable others skil ed in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same in connection with the drawings.

The body bracket or arm A of the lamp is made hollow, so as to hold a quantity of oil sufficient for one nights use, and may be made ornamental, as shown, in imitation of ordinary or modern gas-bu kets, or of other forms, as

fashion or fancy-may require, but always with a holding capacity equivalent to a common oil-reservoir, such as are used with lamps; and this body bracket or arm is also furnished with a burner and chimney, as shown by the dotted lines; or it may be a globe, so as to imitate very closely a gas-bracket. It is also furnished with an oil-hole commanded by a screw-cap or cover, a. On the rear of the bracket or scroll lamp is a re-enforce, I), through which and through said rear portion a bearer, c, is passed, the inner end of which bearer, inside of the bracket, is supported in a bracepiece, d, fastened to the walls or sides of the bracket, but not so as to interfere with the through flow of the oil in the arm or bracket. The rear end of bearer c is firmly secured in a vertical post or piece, c, the lower end of which freely turns in a socket, f, which has a screw-shank, g, upon it, by which it and the lamp are firmly secured to the wall, but so that the lamp can freely swing around in a horizontal plane by means of its hinged connection through the parts 6 and f. An escutcheon may be used around the screw shank or socket, and the wall pieces or parts made ornamental, so that the bracket lamp will very closely resemble a gas-bracket, and the light resemble that of a gas-burner, there being no apparent oil-reservoir visible.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In combination with the bracket or oil-containing arm A, hinge cf, and wall-fastening g, the bearer c, fastened and supported in the piece din the bracket, and in the turning-piece c, as and for the purpose described and represented.
