UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUSTUS UMHOIJTZ, OF TREMONT, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-EXTINGUISHERS.
Specification forming part ofLetters Patent N0. 159,621, dated February 9,1875; application filed January 16, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS UMHOLTZ, of Tremont, in the county of Schuylkill and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lamp -Extinguisher, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improvedlamp-extinguisher, shown as applied to a lamp-burner. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the extinguisher, and the wick-stem with which it is connected.
and lowered by spur-wheels c that work through slots in the side of the said wick-tube A, and are attached to a shaft or stem, D. The, wick-stem D works in hearings in the burner B, and has a button or milled wheel, E, attached to its end for convenience in operating it. F is the operating-plate of the extinguisher, which is placed at the upper end of the wick-tube A, and to one of its ends is attached or upon it is formed an arm, G, that passes down through a slot in the perforated plate of the burner B, and its lower end is coiled around the wick-stem D, where it is kept in place by a sleeve-collar or shoulder placed or formed upon the said stem .D. The
part of the stem D, around which the end of the arm G is wrapped, is made polygonal in form, or is otherwise roughened to produce enough friction to move the arm G and plate F when said arm and plate may be unobstructed. The arm G may be connected with the stem D in various other ways, so as to be operated by friction.
The way herein shown and described has been selected as being simple and effective; but I do not wish to limit myself to that precise way. In the forward part of the plate F are formed openings f which, when the extinguisher is drawn back, allow the air to pass up to the flame freely. Upon the rear edge of the plate F are formed small downwardly-projecting teeth or claws, f, to strike against the top edge of the wick-tube A, and prevent the said plate F from being carried too far forward. The backward movement of the extinguisher is limited by-thc arm Gr striking against the rear end of the slot in the perforated plate of the burner B. With this construction, when the wick is raised, the forward edge of the plate F rest-s against the side of the wick. When the wick is lowered by turning the stem D, as the burning end of the said wick passes into the end of the wicktube A, the plate F is carried forward by friction, cuts off the cinder from the end of the wick, and extinguishes the flame. When the stem is turned to raise the wick the first effect is to carry back the extinguisher and then to raise the wick.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with the wick-stem D, of the extinguisher F, the same being connected by arm G, as shown and described, to admit of simultaneous operation.
2. The extinguisher F G, provided with openings or slots f in the flanged top portion, as and for the purpose specified.
AUGUSTUS UMHOLTZ.
