GEORGE E. SCHROETER, OF ST. LQUIS, MISSOURI.
COMBINED CIGAR CUTTER AND LIGHTER.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that LGnonon H. Scunoirrnn, citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, State of M' souri, have invented certain new and usetul ln'i n'ovements in Combined Cigar Cutters and Lighters, of which the following is a full, clear and exact description, reference l;)eing had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention has relation to improvements in combined cigar cutters and lighters; and it consists in the novel details of construction more fully set forth in the specification and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device; Fig. 2 is a side view thereof; Fig. 3 is a rear elevation thereof; Fig. l is an enlarged view of the operating parts located within "the casing, looking from the rear, the rear wall or slide being removed to expose said parts; Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse section on the line of Fig. a; Fig. (3 is a view similar to Fig.
4, with the burner-pipe removed; Fig. 7 is an enlarged middle tram'averse section through the valve casing showing the teeth valve in normal position; Fig. 8 is a similar section showing the position at the valve after the cutter-lever has been depressed to actuate the cutter or blade; and Fig. 9 is a cross-sectional detail on the line f)--9 of Fig. 6.
The object of my invention is to construct a cigar-cutter the cutting blade of which shall control a valve which will automati- 'ally admit a. current of gas or other fuel to a suitable burner with which cooperates a pilot flame rendered effective by the movement of the blade across the opening through which the cigar tip is inserted preparatory to the cutting action.
in detail the invention may be described as follws:Referring to the drawings, C represents a casing or hood of any suitable design and provided with a rear sliding lid or gate 1 operating in suitable grooves or guide-ways l1. formed on the side walls cl. the casing, whereby access to the interior of the casing may be had at any time. The slide 1 is preferably provided with openings or perforations 0 for admitting air to the interior of the casing. The side walls of the casing are provided with ducts or lines 2 which likewise allow air to flow freely into the casing. Passed through. the bot- Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 27, 1913.
Patented Nov. 'l 8, 1.913.
sci-mi No. 751,090.
tom of the casing is a gas-supply pipe 3, which is maintained rigid within the easing by a cross-member or brace t engaging the side Walls of the casing below the discharge ends of the lines 2, a screw holding the pipe securely to the brace member. To the upper and inner screw-threeded terminal oil? the gas-pipe 3 is coupled a valve-casing 6, in which rotates a rock-valve 7, said aim being held against displacement; by a terminal washer 8 passed over valve body and bearing against the casing wall, said washer being retained on the valve by a. screw 9. The opposite end oi? the valve terminates in a pair of crossarnis 10, 10, by which the valve may be rocked with a throw of the blade or cutter as presently to be seen. To the upper end of the valve-easing is screwed the base of a Bunsen-tube 11 provided with a perforated screw-cap or gastip 12 for the delivery and tree flow of the gas, said cap being positioned opposite the air passage-way 13-3 formed at the base of the Bunsen-tube as well ui'iderstood in the art. The upper end of the Bunsen-tube terminates in a gas-burner Il l ot any approved construction, and when the parts are assembled, the burner 14 comes directly opposite the central peripherally perforated hollow boss 15 formed in the demo or root of the casing (l. Leading from a convenient point of the valve-casing 6 is a wire tube 16 whiehis provided with a (llll'lllllltlVO Bunsenburner 1.7 secured in position in any mechanical manner, and directed to ard the burner 14;. This burner 17 serves to carry a pilot flame w.
Pivotally mounted on the inner face of the front wall of the casing is a lever 18 one arm of which passes through a slot .9 in the side wall of the casing, the projecting end of said lever-arm being provided with a dished finger hold or hearing 19, the lever being normally held so as to maintain said outer arm in an elevated position by a contracting spring 20 one end of which is secured to the outer lever arm between the side wall of the casing and the axis of the lever, the 0pposite end of the spring being fastened to the front wall of the casing. .lrlinged to the free end oi. the inner lever arm is one end of a link 21 whose opposite end is pivotally coupled to the end of one arm of an oscillating valve-control lever 22 pivoted near its center to the front wall of the casing C. The lever 2 is provided with lugs or fork-memhers 28, 23, arranged in pairs on opposite sides of the axis of rotation of the lever, each pair being adapted to engage anarm 10 of the valve 7. in this way the valve with its casing 6 are readily detachable from the le ver 22, a decided advantage in assembling.
or disassembling the parts.
The valve 7 is provided with a main crossport a, and supplemental ports 7), c, (the port 7 through a constricted passage 6, to a port (Z in the casing 6, the port (Z conveyingthe gas to't-he tube 16 and pilot-flame burner 1.7
where the gas burns with a'tiny flame 10. hen the valve 7 is rocked with the depres sion of the outerarni ofthe lever 18, the
port aconducts the main current of gas to the burner 14, bringing the larger port a into communicationwithport (Z (Fig. 8) whereby an increased quantity of gasis delivered to the'pilot-burner 17 which thus projects a long pilot-flamew well up against the stream issuing from the burner l gand igniting the latter. The end of the lever 22- opposite that to which the link 21 is attached carries a blade or cutter 24 hearing against the inner face of the front wall of the casing (Land sweeping across an open ing 0 through which the tip of the cigar to he cut is inserted.
From the foregoing the operation will be readily understood. Wlien'the parts are at rest and in their normal position, the outer end of the main or actuatinglever 18 is elevated, the blade 2% is to one side of'the opening 0 and the valve-ports are "as indicated in Fig; 7. By inserting the tip of the cigar into the opening 0, and depi'essin the outer lever arm of the lever 18, the valve7 is rocked so as to dispose the ports thereof as shown in Fig. 8. 22 (which controls the valve 7) is oscillated in proper direction to swingthe blade or cutter across the cigar and thus sever the At the same time the lever position as shown in Fig. 8, and froin the iiame of the main burner the/smoker can light his cigar. Upon releasing the-lever 18,
the spring 20 (which was under tension during the depression ofthe lever) restores-the parts to their first or-iiormal position to be The nec'es-- factuated by the n st smoker. sary complement or airlSClGllYQlfiCl" to the burners not only through the fiues 2, but through the perforations 0 of the slidel.
Having described my inventiomivhat I claim is ln a combined cigar cutter and lighteria casing or hood p ovided with air feeding:
means, and having an opening in the-wall for the insertion of acigar-tip, an actuating lever pivoted o'n'the inner face of the "wall aforesaid, and having anhrm projecting throu h the conti uous wall of the hood a w n second lever mounted pivotaiiy on the inner face of said wall, a bitIQlQOlTOllQ arm of said lever sweeping across the opening aforesaid, a link coupling the opposite arm of said blade-carrying lever to the adjacent arm of the actuating lever, avalve-oasiiig opposite the blade-carrying lever, a spring for. controlling the actuatinglerer, a rock-valve in the valve-casing, a pair of arms carried by the rec r- .*'al"-. 'e outside the valve-casing and disposed in diametrically opposite directions, and lugs disposed in pairs on opposite sides of tie axis of oscillation of the blade carrying lever for detachably engaging the arms on said rock-valve;
In testimony whereof I afii x my signature;
in presence 01"- two witnesses. V
