No. 435,190. Patented Aug.26,1890.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
COMMODORE D. RUNDELL, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF TVVO-THIRDS TO \VILLIAh/I I-I. JACKSON AND \VILLIAM PERRY CHARD, BOTH OF SAME PLACE. V
LIGHTING AND WlCK-RAISING ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 435,190, dated August 26, 1890.
Application filed February 6, 1890. Serial No. 339,445- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, COMMODORE DECATUR RUNDELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at the cit-y of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lighting and WVick-Raising Attachments, of which the following is aspecification.
This invention relates to certain new and i0 useful improvements in devices for lighting and raising or lowering the wicks of lamps and lanterns.
The invention has for its object the construction of a device whereby lamp-wicks may be lighted and raised or lowered without necessarily removing the globe or chimney.
To this end the invention consists in the peculiar construction, arrangement, and combination of the parts, all as more fully hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
Figure 1 is aside elevation of the lower portion of a lantern with my device attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a top plan of the same with the globe removed.
In the accompanying drawings, which fornr a part of this specification, A represents a tube secured to the outside rim B of the lanternbase, its inner end being in close proximity to the wick-tube B and Wick f. The inner end of this tube is provided with spurs or teeth 0. In the side of the tube is formed an opening 6, into which the thumb-screw e of the shaft Ii projects, as shown.
The operation of the device is as follows: When itis desired to light the wick, a match 5 D is inserted in the tube at b, and the head of the match is lacerated and ignited by passing over the teeth 0, and the flame of thematch in turn ignites the wick. If desired to turn the wick up or down, the match is worked against the edge of the thumb-screw e, so as to turn it in the desired direction.
While I have shown my device as attached to a lantern, it is obvious that the same may be advantageously attached to various other styles of lamps provided wit-h substantially the same kind of wick-raising mechanism.
VVh'at I claim as my invention is In combination with a lamp or lantern, a tube A, secured to said lamp, its inner end being provided with teeth 0 and in close proximity'to the wick-tube, said tube also being provided with a slot 6 for the reception of the edge of the thumb-screw e of the wick-operating mechanism, the parts being constructed, 5 5 arranged, and operating in the manner and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
COMMODORE D. RUND ILL.
