WILLIAM H. WEEKS,
OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
Letters Patent No. 99,123, dated January 25, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN AUTOMATIC HGH'I'ING-ATTACHMENT FOR LAMPS AND PAPER- BURNERS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. WEEKS, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Automatic Lighting- Attachment for Lamp and Taper-Burners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a detail vertical section of my improved burner.
Figure 2 is an under side view of-the same.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved lighting-attachment for taper and lamp-burners, by means of which the wick or taper may be instantly and conveniently lighted, and which shall at the same time be so constructed as'to raise the taper or wick by the same operation; and
It consists in the construction of various parts of the attachment with the burner, as hereinafter more fully described.
A is the body of the burner, and
B is the taper or wick-tube, about the construction of which parts there is nothing new.
0 are the spur-wheels, by means of which the wick or taper is raised through the tube B, and which are attached to the shaft D, which passes through and is pivoted to the walls of the burner A, and to one of the ends of which is attached a button, E, for convenience in operating it.
F is a lever, pivoted to the body A of the burner, and the upper part of which is curved, so that its forward or upper end, which is roughened, may pass through a slot in the tube B, and strike against the wick or taper within said tube.
The lever F is provided with a thumb-piece, f, for convenience in operating it. 1
The lower part or arm of the lever F passes down through a slot in the body'A of the burner, and to its lower end is pivoted one end of the connecting-bar G, the other end of which is pivoted to a pawl-wheel, H, working upon the shaft D, and the teeth of which take hold of the teeth of the ratchet-wheel I, rigidly'attached to the said shaft '1).
The pawl-wheel H is held up against the ratchetwheel I, with sufiicient force to cause its teeth to take hold of the teeth of the said ratchet-wheel when moved forward, and allow its teeth to slide over the teeth of the said ratchet-wheel when moved backward, by a spring, J, coiled around the shaft D, and resting against the said pawl-wheel H, as shown in fig. 2.
The lever F f, after being drawn back, is thrown forward to give the blow, by a spring, K, connected witlrthe body A of the burner, and acting against the lower end of the lever F f.
By this construction, every time the lever F f is drawn back to give the blow, the wick or taper will be raised a little.
The said wick or taper may also be raised in the ordinary manner, by operating the button E. g
The fulminate to be ignited or exploded by the percussion of the lever F f, may be placed upon the wick, and so prepared as to be unaffected. by the wax of the taper, or the oil of the lamp. Or the lever F may be made hollow, and a sufficient quantity of said fulminate fed forward at each movement of said lever.
Having ,thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination of a lever, F f, and spring K, with the body and tube of a taper or lamp-burner, substantially as herein shown and described and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the lever Ff, spring K, connecting-bar G, pawl-wheel H, ratchet-wheel I, and spring J, with the spur-wheel, shaft-body, and tube of a taper or lamp burner, substantially as herein shown and described and for the'purposes set forth.
The above specification of my invention signed by me, this 28th day of December, 1869.
WM. -H. WEEKS.
