Description

y sired,
i UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES RIGBY, OF` CINCINNATI, OHIO. .f'
IMPROVEMENT IN GAS-BURNERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 146,553, dated January 20, 1874; application filed June 10, 1873.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES RIGBY, of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Gas-Burner; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full-and exact description of the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention is designed to insure the more perfect combustion of the llame, and, by thus producing more light, to economize the gas. It consists `mainly in the employment, in combination with a central tip, of a smaller tip upon each side, arranged on the same horizonf vtal line', or a little below it, but set at an acute angle relatively t'o the central tip, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawings, Figures 1 and 4 represent side elevations of my improved burner; Fig. 2 a sectional elevation, and Fig. 3 an end elevation, of the same.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe fully its construction and manner of operation.
A represents a central tip, and a c side tips, all of which are connected to the maintube A, as shown. The side tips are smaller than the central tip, preferably in about the proportions of one to two, and they are located in the same horizontal line as the central tip, or a little below it. They are also set at an acute angle relatively to the central tip, as shown. If dehowever, they may be arranged vertically, as shown in Fig. 4, with slots so cut as to deliver the gas at a proper angle.
y The operation is as follows: When theburner ,is in use, the larger portion of the gas passes through theicentral tip and forms the main flame, the remaining portion of the gas passing through the side tips and producing a small ilame, which is discharged against the dark or unconsumed portion of the main ame. In consequence of this action, the dark portion of the main flame is supplied with the requisite oxygen, and the hydrocarbons ordinarily unconsumed are ignited and burned, the ilanie consisting wholly or almost wholly of white light. i
It is essential that these `supplemental tips be arranged in the same horizontal line as the 'main tip, or a little below it, in order that the oxidizing portion of their iiames may strike the dark portion of the main ame at the proper angle to augment the flame. For` the same reason, also, it is desirable that these llames should beof smaller size,
tions is reduced.
each side of the central tip is advantageous,
because by this means the pressure upon each side of main liame is made equal, and it is, in a measure, supported thereby, so as to be unaected, to a certain degree, by drafts, while, in the use of a single supplemental iame, it has been found, in practice, that, when exposed to draft, the flame would assume a curved form and smoke at the edges.`
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The described burner, having the branching head attached to the central tube, and the cen` tral tip A and side tips a a, the auxiliary side y tips being inclined toward the main tip, asxdescribed, for the purpose set forth.
This specification signed and witnessed this 9th day of June, 1.873. Y
. JAMES RIGfBY.`
