IMPROVEMENT IN LAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,940, dated February 20, 1872.
.To all whom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that I, IRA W. SHALER, of Brooklyn, Kings county, New York State, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamps and Lamp-Burners, of which the following is a specification:
My invention is directed to obtaining a more perfect consumption of the products of combustion in dat-wick lamps and lamp-burners.
In order to produce the result which I have in view I have found the following elements necessary: First, a deflector, provided with an oblong dame-slot, which has its edges serrated, indented, or is equivalently-formed, in order to deliver a comparatively narrow and long ame, the Serrat-ions or indentures in the edges ofthe slot, or the equivalent formation of that part of the deiiector in the immediate neighborhood of the slot serving to supply the llame at the name-slot with a comparatively large volume of air, and to bring about a very intimate mixture of the iiame therewith. Second, a chimney provided with a contracted neck with an oblong opening in it over'the slot in the deiiector, and serving to direct additional air-currents upon the llame rising from the slotted deiiector at the point where it passes up through the oblong contracted chimneyneck.
To enable others skilled in the art to understand and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe the manner in which the same is or may be carried into effect by reference to the accompanying drawing, in Which- Figure l is a vertical central section of a complete lamp made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the burner without the chimney. Fig. 3 is a top view of the chimney.
The burner, with the exception of the deiector, is of any usual construction, provided with wick-raising devices, screw-threaded base, airdistributer, and one or more wick-tubes. The one shown in illustration of my invention is of the sun-burner type, a being the screwthreaded base b,the perforated air-distributer and chimney-rest; o, a single wick-tube; and d, the wick-raiser. The detiector e is supported in an elevated position above the perforated air-distributer, as'usual in this class of burners. The name-slot is shown at f, its edges being serrated or indented, so as to form a series of small projections or fingers, which serve both to admit an increased supply of air to the flame, and to bring about an admiXture of this air with the flame passing through the slot. I prefer to form the slot as shown in the drawing but it may be "aried somewhat without departure from the invention. An ordinary sun-burner chimney, or chimney with straight sides, will not answer with this burner, as I have found .it impossible, With such chimney, to produce a brilliant flame, or to prevent the lamp from smoking. and above the contracted neck a flue, i, ofthe requisite length. The contracted neck, with its oblong opening, is indispensable to produce the proper consumption ofthe products of combustion, forming as it were a second deflector above the metallic deiector e, and this second deiiector should also be transparent, as a considerable portion of the illuminating iiame is below the contracted neck. The form of the chimney-flue i may be varied but I have found the best results by far to be produced by the employment of a flue ofthe oval or elliptical form shown in the drawing, having' at least the same area at the top'as at the bottom, whereits outward curve above the contracted neck terminates. The air which passes through the contracted neck, and forms a second draught, is supplied in any suitable manner; in this instance it passes up through the spaces between the outer edge ofthe deflector and the base of the chimney, and is directed by the curved sides of the base to impinge upon the flame at the point where it passes through the contracted neck.
With a lamp such as described, the various oils and uids now generally in use for illuminating purposes can be employed to great advantage. Amore perfect combustion is brought about, and a very brilliant iiame is produced. Theiiame is not so broad as in ordinary burners or lamps, but is somewhat narrower and considerably longer.
Havingdescribed myinvention and the manner in which the same is or may be carried into effect, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
