IMPROVEMENT IN VAPQl-BURNERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,637, dated January 9, 1872.
Tokwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL Gr. MUNN, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hydrocarbon- Vapor Burners, and I do-declare that the following is a truel and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon and being a part of this specication, in which- Figure lis aperspective View of Inyimproved burner. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is a cross section of the same 5 and Fig. 4 is a perspective of the regulating-cap.
Like letters refer to like parts in each figure.
The nature oi' this invention relates to an improvement in the construction of acombined Ihydrocarbon-Vapor generator and burner and it consists in the combination of the dei-lector, the burner, and certain guides, all as more fully hereinafter described. y
In the drawing, A represents the safety-tube iilled with the usual packing topreveut burningback. B is the generating-chamber slipped over the top ofthe tube A. O is a cylindrical burner, rising from the generator, and has a minute orifice, a, in one side near its base. On the same side as this oriiicea deector, D, projects laterally. This deector curves upward and inward to retain the dame and give it an opportunity to combine with the oxygen of the atmosphere, and thus produce perfect combustion. v I am aware that this particular curve or curl of the deflector is not new, and, therefore, disclaim its invention. In addition to this curve I curve the delector circumferentially throughout its length7 with an increased inward curl at the ends, to overcome the difficulty in burners of this class hitherto experienced in the shooting of the vapor past the corners,
and burning with a smoky flame. The fluid carried up by the packing to the generatingch amb er is vaporized by the heat communicated to said chamber by the dele'ctor, and issuing from the orifice the Vapor strikes the deiiector in combustion, is expanded, and spread over its entire surface.
Constructed as above described the burner may be considered as complete, but as it is frequently desirable to reduce the dame and consumption of iiuid Iplace aregulating-cap, E, on the burner, the construction of which is fully shown in Fig. 4 of the accompanying drawing. The cap has an opening, b, through a solid part of its top for the reception of a wire-pin, by which it may be rotated on the burner. In one side is a vertical slot, c, through which the vapor issuing from the oriice in the burner passes. By rotating the cap the dame may be reduced or cut oi' entirely independently of the stopcock. If reduced much the jet of flame has a tendency to point oif to one side, which tendency may be corrected by placing a guidering, d, between the orice and the deiiector at either side. These guides may be cast on or made of a separate piece of sheet metal bent to the proper form and slipped over the burner. The generating-chamber, burner, and deiector, for convenience, are cast in one piece.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the generating-chamber B, the guides d, the deector D, the burner O, and the regulating-cap E, provided with the slot c, all constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as described and shown.
