IMPROVEMENT IN ARGAND BURNERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 72,187, dated December 17, 1867.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELLIOTT P. GLEAsoN, of the city, county, and' State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use certain new and useful Improvements in the Construction of Argand Burners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and correct description of my invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of my improved burner; Fig. 2, a sectional view of the same; Fig. 3, top view of the burner.
In the drawings like parts of my invention are pointed out by the same letters of reference.
The nature of my invention consists in certain improvements, as hereinafter more fully described, in the construction of Argand burners.
The object of the present invention is to construct an Argand burner in such a manner that the same, when in operation, shall be free from the hissing or singing noise which usually attends the passage of gas to the burner, particularly when the pressure of the gas is high, and at the same time to regulate the supply of gas to the burner, and to provide for a more thorough consumption of the gas so supplied.
To enable those skilled in the arts to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the construction and operation of the same.
A is the lower or bottom section of the burner,'and B the upper or top section of the same. The lower section of the burner is provided with the inlet for the gas, and also with a neck having cut upon it a screw-thread. The upper section of the burner has attached to it the arms b and collar c, which collar is provided upon its luider side with openings communicating with the arms b. The collar has upon its interior a screw-thread corresponding to the screw-thread upon the neck of the lower section of the burner, so that when the upper and lower sections are put together the collar upon the upper section is screwed over the lower section. Through the center of this collar is screwed a screw, C, which, when the sections are combined, projects into the chamber formed by the interior of the neck and collar, and which screw, when inserted, is positioned directly above the inlet for the gas in the lower section. This screw projects above the collar, and is provided with a lever, D, by which it may be freely turned. The burner E is constructed as Argand burners usually are constructed, except that instead of being provided with but one series of openings upon its top for the supply of gas to the iiame, I make a second series of openings in the same, thus supplying two currents of gas to the flame, increasing the brilliancy of the light,
more 'thoroughly consuming the gas supplied, and allowing the gas supplied to be at low pressure.
The gas enters the inletA and strikes against the lower end of the screw C, which has a tendency to deaden any hissing or singing noise that may attend the passage of the gas, and at the same time serves to distribute it. Thus the gas distributed by the screw passes through the openings in the bottom of the collar to the arms, and is supplied to the ilame through the two series of openings in the top of the burner.
The supply of gas to the burner may be regulated by elevating or depressing the screw, which is done by turning the lever attached to the same, the screwbeing depressed to lessen the supply7 and elevated to increase it.
Having thus described my invention, `what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In Argand burners, the regulatin g-screw, for the purposes fully described.
2. In combination with the same, the lever, for the purposes fully indicated.
