W. H. CALNAN RECEPTACLE FOR CONTANING POWDER PUFFS AND POWDER FOR TOILET PURPOSES I Filed June 19, 1925 Jig@ @www Patented June 29, 1926.
UNITED STATES PATENT ermee.
VW'ILFRID HENRY CALNA, 0F LONDON, ENGLAND.
RECEPTACLE FOR CONTAINING PGWDER PUFFS AND POW'DER FOR TOILET PURPOSES.
Application led .Tune 19, 1925, Serial No.
This invention relates to receptacles for containing powder puffs and powder for toilet purposes and it has for its object certain improvements designed to facilitate the replenishing of the supply of powder without wasting or spilling same.
According to this invention a sieve is employed mounted without the aid of gummed strips, adhesive or other means calculated to secure a more or less permanent fixing of the same in such manner as to permit of its being readily removed or displaced to eXpose the full or substantially the full opening in the receptacle for the introduction of the powder. i
In order that the invention may be better understood drawings are appended illus trating two forms `of the invention as applied to a known type of device embodying a rigid receptacle and as applied to a device embodying a receptacle in the form of a flexible body provided with a spring whereby said body is normally distended and having a sieve mounted therein and a lid or cover, in which:
Fig. l is an elevation showing the receptacle closed,
Fig. 2 is a vertical section,
Fig. 8 is a plan showing the receptacle closed, V
Fig. 4 is a plan showing the receptacle open,
Fig. 5 is a sectional view showing the invention applied to a receptacle in which the powder containing portion is formed of rigid material.
The powder is carried in a round shallow receptacle a having an upstanding flexible side wall a2 receiving a supporting ring Z) in the upper part of the receptacle to which the upper edge of said wall is secured. An intermediate dislnshaped ring b having an upper lateral flange resting on said supporting ring, has an inner lower flange b2, and an intermediate main portion b3 received in said supporting ring with a friction fit'and projecting a` distance below said supporting ring A perforate member or sieve c is secured on said lower flange for the reception of a powder puff c thereon substantially below the Lipper face of the intermediate ring b.
A helical spring e engaging between said ring b and the bottom of the receptacle and having its upper convolution disposed hetween said intermediate portion b3 and Said 38,252, and in Great Eritain .Tune 4, 1924.
oted on said pin between the ears of the supporting .ring and the ear of the intermediate ring whereby the cover is hinged onV the ring b over the ring'b. A catch vl on the receptacle holds the cover closed.
AnyV other provision may, however, be
`made for securing the parts closed, such provision, however, being preferably such that while .thel opening of the lid or cover may be readily'effected the fastening for the sieve carrying member is not so apparent or so readily operable.
The interior of the lid may also, in thiscase, be highly polished to serve as a mirror, or a mirror may be secured thereto.
Then it is desired to apply powder to puff e', the bottom of the receptacle is pressed with the hand or against Some suitable support, collapsing the receptacle and pressing the powder through the sieve to the puff. The collapsibility of the receptacle permits it to b'e reduced to its smallest dimensions for carrying.
Instead of employing a body formed yof flexible material a rigid material may be employed for this purpose the sieve and lid being hingedly mounted therein with a hinged lid.
Such an arrangement is shown in Fig. 5, on reference to which it will be seen that the spring e is omitted and the lid 71, and sieve carrying body g are' hingedly connected to the body a in the same manner as in Figs. 1 to Il. v
I claim as my invention: 1

In combination, a receptacle; a supporting ring in the upper part of the receptacle; an intermediate dish shaped ring hinged and resting on said supporting ring; a sieve secured in said intermediate ring; a pair of widely spaced ears mounted fast on said supporting ring; a pin passed through said ears; an ear mounts@- ast On said interna.ediw
