ASSIGNORS TO MAJESTIC METAL SPECIALTIES, INC.,
IPORATON OF NEW YORK,
OF NEW YORK, N. Y., .A COBr VANITY BOX.
Application filed August 5, 1924. Serial No. 730,141.
yThe invention relates to vanity boxes of the character carried by women and comprising a body portion to receive face powder or the like, a lid or cover for said body portion and a mirror, and our invention resides, as to one of its features, in providing the lid or cover with a mirror which shall be exposed at the top of the lid when the box is closed and in so `hinging or linking the lid or cover to the body of the box that when the box is open said lid may be faced frontwardly, then standing in an inclined position at the rear portion of the'body of the box.
A further feature of our invention resides in a novel container for loose face powder to be seated in the body of the box, this container having a specially formed cover permitting the powder to escape from the container and lodge upon it, and said cover also being adapted as a seat for a powder puff'.
The invention will be fully understood from the detailed description hereinafter presented, reference beingl had to the acconipanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a central vertical longitudinal section, on an enlarged scale, .through a vanity box embodying our invention, the .section being on the dotted line 1 1 of Fig. 6 and the box being shown in closed condition;
` Fig. 2 is a corresponding section through the same, with the lid or cover in open position, and the mirror carried thereby facing frontwardly; e
Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section through the box, taken on the dotted line 3-,3 of Fig. 6; i
Fig. 4 is a vertical section through` a portion of the box, taken on the dotted line 4-4 of Fig. 6;`
Fig. 'is a detached plan view of an interior box, shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, within which loose powder, as distinguished from a compact, may be carried;
Fig. 6 is a plan view of the box illustrated in Figs. 1,y 2 and 3, and
Fig. 7 is a vertical longitudinal section through a modified form of the invention, a compact being` illustrated in the body of' the box shown in Fig. 7
In the drawings, 'referring to Figs. 1 to recess 29 formed therein.
6 inclusive, 10 designates the body of the box and 11 a lid or cover portion for said body. The body portion 10 is circular in outline and has outwardly curved sides 12 and a top opening 13, and the bottom of the body 10 is recessed, as at 14, to receive a box 15 within which toilet powder may be contained, said box 15 being centered in the said recess 14. llhe box 15 has a cover 16 closely fitting upon the same, as shown in Fig. 2, and said cover has a series of radial grooves or depressions 17 which taper and widen outwardly and terminate at their outer ends in openings 18 through which the powder may sift upon the top of the cover 16, and be more or less confined thereon within said grooves or depressions. Upon the cover 16 will be seated a suitable powder puff'or pad 19.
The lid or cover 11 comprises an annular metal ring 2O which is flanged downwardly, as at 21, to enter the open top of the body 10, and said ring inthe formation of the flange 21 has formed thereon a shoulder 22 which seats upon the upper edges of the body portion 10 around the opening' 13 therein so as to arrest the lid or' cover in correct position upon said body 10. The fiange 21 has a close friction llt within 'the edges ofthe body 10 surrounding the opening 13. The ring 2O is formed with an inwardly extending top annular flange 23 which serves, at its lower surface, as a seat for the edge portion of a mirror 24, which, when the box is closed, faces upwardly and is therefore exposed through the ring 20. The mirror 24 is held firmly in position'against the flange 23 by means of a plate 25 which closely fits within the ring 2O and is held in place by an internal shoulder formed in the flange 21 due to the formation of the external shoulder 22.
The lid or cover 11 thus comprises the annular ring 20, mirror 24 and plate 25,
and said lid or cover is connected'with the body 10 of the box by means of a link which is secured at one end on a pin 27 carried by the plate 25 near the middle thereof and at its outer end on a pin 28 secured to the edge of the body 10 in a The link 26 is in the form of a reasonably broad flat plate,
and at its inner end is of sleeve formation to enclose the pin 2T, while at its outer end said link is also of sleeve for mation to enclose the pin 2S. The link 26 is formed at its outer end with a right angle bend 3l) which permits the link when the box is in closed position to lie 7'ithin the box, as shown in Fig. i. The recess Q9 at its outer edge forms a shoulder which acts to support the link 26 in an upwardly and rearwardly inclined position, when the box is opened, as shown in Fig. 2.
vWhile the box is in closed position, the lid or coter il fully closes the opening 1,3 in the top of the body portion of the box and at such time the mirror 2l has its face exposed and may be utilized as a mirror without openingthe box. lVhen the lid or cover ll is opened upwardly to expose the powder pui'f i9 or whatever may be within the body of the box, said lid or cover after being freed from the body of the box will be turned on the pin 2T to carry its rear edge upwardly and its front edge downwardly against the link 2G, and in this operation the mirror 2d will be faced forwardly for the convenient use of the owner of the box. One of the special features of our invention resides in the fact that when the box is closed the mirror .24 faces upwardly and may be used without openingl the box, and vthat when the box is opened the lid or cover ll may be swiveled on the pin 2T so as to face the mirror frontwardly. Then the lid or cover 1l has been opened and the mirror is faced forwardly, the lid or cover is supported in inclined position against the link 26, said link being prevented from turning downwardly towardv the rear by the engagement of the outer end thereof with the shoulder 31 formed on the body-of the box. The link 2G by having some breadth at the pins Q7, 28 serves to very firmly connect the lid or cover 1l with 'the body Aof the box. and said link permits lon the opening of the lid or cover il the positioning of the mirror to face frontwardly and also serves as a brace for supporting the mirror in this operative position, as shown in Fig. 2.
The box or container 15 is of special utility when loose powder is to be provided within the vanity box. The grooves or depressions 1T in the top 1.(3 of the container or box l5 gradually widen and deepen toward their outer ends, and in this formation the depressions or grooves 17 may gather enough of the pwoder from the box for the use of the putt' or pad 19 without an undue scat tering about of the powder.
The modified form of the invention shown 'in Fig. T utilizes a plain cylindrical body poi-tion l0 and a lid or cover 4l which is substantially identical in construction with the lid or cover ll hereinbefore described. ln the form of the invention shown in Fig. 7, the lid or cover ll is equipped with the exposed mirror l2 and back-plate 423. to which the inner end of a link l-l is hinged, the outer end' of the link extending outward ly tlirough the rear side of the body lt) and being hinged upon a pin 45. lYhen the lid il is released from the body -lll and moved upwardly and toward the rear, said lid may be folded downwardly against the link l-t to face the mirror frontwardly in the inanner indicated in Fig. 2. The modified form the invention shown in Fig. 'T embodies the use of a plain cylindrical box-body il with no change in the lid or cover ll and only a slight change in the link 4A adapting said link to the shape of the body 10. In the construction shown in Fig. T we illustrate the use of a compact i6 placed within the body l0. Fig. T is presented to indicate that we do not limit our invention to all of the small details of form and construction hereinbefore described, since these may be modified without departure from the spirit of our invention.
That we claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
l. A vanity box comprising a body portion adapted to hold a toilet requisite, a lid or cover portion provided at its top with an outwardly faced exposed mirror and a link connecting said lid or cover portion with said body portion and adapted when the box is open to permit the lid or cover to be turned toward a vertical position to face the mirror forwardly, said link being hinged at one end to said cover portion and at the other end to said body portion.
