Description

R. H. BIGGS GARTER Filed June 2 9, 1925 Patented .lune 1, 1926.
ROEERT HWARD BIGGS, OF ST. CATHARNES, ONTARIO, CATABA.
GAB/TER.
Application filed June 29, 1925.
My invention relates to improvements in garters of the type comprising a non-elastic band divided intermediately of its length, and a metallic resilient connector detachably connecting the ends of the band together, and carrying means for attachment to the sock of the wearer, and the object of the invention is to simplify and cheapen the construction and thereby reduce the cost of manufacture, and it consists essentially of the arrangement ano. construction of parts as hereinafter more particularly explained. o
llig. 1 is a perspective view of my garter applied to the leg of a wearer.
Fig. 2 is a detail view of the cast oif.
Fig. 3 is a detail of the knob plate coacting with the cast off.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 4 4 Figure 2.
Fig. 5 is a sectional View on line 5 5 Figure 2.
In the drawings like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
1 indicates a band of non-elastic material which is passed around the leg of a wearer as indicated and formed at one end into a loop 2 connected to an adjusting bar 3 which is slidable upon the band 1 in order to adjust the length of the band in proportion to the size of garter required according to common practice.
4 is a cast oil' comprising an elongated loop portion 5 which is passed through the loop 2 Aand is therefore held adjacent to the adjusting bar 3. Centrally of the length of the loop 5 the cast oli is 'formed into a forward extending loop 6,
is a cross piece preferably provided with a central recess 8. The cross piece 7 is provided with orifices 9 and 10 through which the side arms of the forwardly extending loop slidably extends.
11 is a fine coiled spring which is wound around the loop 6 at the outside of the cross piece 7 so as to bear at its free end against such cross piece.
19 is a pad which is secured to the opposite end of the band 1 and to which is secured a metal plate 18 by means of stitching 14 passing through the fabric of the pad 1Q and through tie slotted openings 15 of the plate. The plate 13 is provided with Serial No. 40,405.
a forward extension 16 from which extends a knob or other headed member 17.
18 is a suspender n' ember bywhich the lower end of the pad 12 is connected to the stocking of the wearer in the usual manuel'.
All it is necessary to do in attaching my garter is to pass the band 1 around the leg, pass the knob portion 17 through the loop 5 so as to pass longitudinally of the loop 6 into the recess 8 of the cross piece 7, pressure is thereby exerted against the cross piece which compresses the spring 11 towards the closed end of the loop 6 and thereby provides resilient tension for the garter around the leg of the wearer so that it will give more or less according to the wearers movements and always exert a firm yet comfortable hold around the leg.
it may be also pointed out that as the plate 13 is secured to the pad 12 by means Iof stitching passing through the slots 15 at each side of the plate, and the headed member being located centrally of the plate that any play of the loop 6 of the castoff 4 takes place longitudinally of the plate from such headed member and between the stitching passing through the slots 15. lt
will therefore be seen that there is no danger of the stitching being cut by a continuous rubbing action of any portion of the garter thereagainst.
That I claim as my invention is:
1. ln a garter, the combination with a non-elastic divider` band, a cast off secured to one end of the band and provided with a longitudinally extending metallic loop opened at one end and closed at the opposite end, a cross piece sl table upon the arms of the loop, a spiral spring coiled around the arms of the loop and the closed end theref, against the ends of which the cross piece a headed stem carried by the opposite end of the band and adapted to enter the open end of the loop to bear against the cross piece to compress the spring towards t ie closed end of the loop, and means for detachably connecting the band to the sock of the wearer.
2. A garter comprising a band of nonelastic material, a pad secured to one end of the band provided with means for detachably connecting the band to the stocking of the wearer, a plate provided with longitudinally extending side slots, stitchroo ing adapted to pass through the slots to Co11- neet the suine to the pad, a headed stem carried by the pli-.te in alioument with the longitudinal @entre thereof, a cast oil' oarl ried by the gitudinally the Cust o'll' opposite end of the band, a loneitendmg loop forming part of and :ida Qted lo Contact with the plate between the aforesaid slots, and resilient means carried by the loop against which the headed stem bears to compress 16 suoli resilient menus towards i'lie closed end of the loop.
