BENJAMIN F. GAMBRILL AND JAMES L. SHERIDAN, OF BALTIMORE, MD.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLEARERS FOR DRAWING-ROLLS.-
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1583398, dated January 12, 1875; application filed November 2i, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, BENJAMIN F. GAM- BRILL and J AMES L. SHERIDAN, of Baltimore, in the county of Baltimore and in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drawing-Frames and Oard-Heads for Cardin g Cotton and Wool and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters .of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to the ordinary drawing-frames and heads; and it consists in a self-adjusting clearer, having beveled edges, and inserted in the cover placed over the rollers of the drawing'frame or head, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure l is a side elevation of a drawingframe' or head embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same without the clearer. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the clearer.
A represents the usual frame, with rollers B B and O (J therein. 1) is the cover placed over the rollers. Usually this cover is made on both sides or wedge-shaped, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. It is of course to be understood that if only one slot is used in the cover D, the entire bar may be inserted in said slot, and if more than two slots are made in the cover the bar should be cut with a corresponding number of projections. The under side of the cover D, as well as the beveled sides of the projections a, are covered with cloth. The beveled edge of the clearer strikes between the rollers O (J, which are also covered, and keeps them smooth and clear, thereby preventing waste of material. It also prevents the tapping of the rollers, which often occur, thereby saving considerable time. It dispenses with the use of varnish on the rollers, thereby saving the cost of the same. The clearer also acts as an indicator of the condition of the rollers under the cover, rising if the rollers become lapped, and showing at once if anything is wrong, and thereby saving breakage of the gearing.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The self-adjusting clearing-board G, having beveled edges or projections b, in combination with the rollers O O and the slotted cover D, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands this 30th day of October, 1874.
