UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SEBASTIAN N. MILLER, OF PIEDMONT, WEST VIRGINIA.
`PAPER-MAKINGfMACHlNE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 603,197, dated April 26, 1898.
l j Application-filed June 3, 1897. Serial No. 639,235. (No model.).
T a/ZZ whom it may concern.' g
Be it known that I, SEBAsTIAN N. MILLER, of lPiedmont, in the county of Mineral vand State of West Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Paper-Making Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in papermaking machines, and particularly in the guard-board mechanism; and the invention consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a front view, and Fig. 2 a side view, of a part of a machine provided with my improvements. Fig. 3 is an enlarged front viewl of a part of the improved guard-board. Y, Fig. 4 is a top plan view thereof; and Figs. 5 and 6 are cross-sections on, respectively, lines 5 and 6 6 of Fig. 3.
The rollerA is the ordinary top couch-roller of a Fourdrinier machine, and it may be supported in any manner desired. The ordinary guard-board B is preferably used asa support for the improved guard-board, because it facilitates the application of the improvement to the machines now in use; but manifestly the improved guard-board may be supported on any other part of the framing of the machine without departing from the principles of the invention.
The improved guard-board comprises the casing C, usually of metal, having in its under side the socket D, opening toward the vtop couch-roll and extending from end to end of the casing and open at its ends. has holes E, located above the socket D and between the set-screws G, for the screws or bolts F, by which it is secured to the board B or other support, and is provided in its top at intervals, usually of about eight inches, with threaded openings for the set-screws G, which project into the socket D and bear upon the guard-board strip. II. The casing holds the strip firmly in place, while the screws, being arranged in close relation, operate to set any portion of the strip down to the couchroller and relieve pressure on the strip at any other portion or portions desired, By this construction if a strip of paper is being made of less than the full width of the machine pressure need be supplied to the guard-board This casing strip only to the extent of the width of the paper, the rest` of the strip being left free of pressure, avoiding wear on the roller, which roller is covered with a Woolen jacket. The use of'this improved guard-board will save ifty per cent. of Wear upon the said jacket and also on the strip and will at the same time secure an even pressure of just the degree desired. By the use of a thin Waterboard strip the same when worn can be easily replaced at a small cost and can be replaced without stopping'the machine, it being only necessary to ease up the pressure-screws, slip the worn strip endwise out ofthe casing, and insert another strip in its place, whichcan be done by inserting the strip endwise into the casing beneath the pressure-screws,which may be then'adjusted to secure the desired tension at every point along the guard-board strip. v As best shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the front wall of the casing terminates at its free edge `above that of the opposite or rear wall. The purpose of this is to permit the use of the casing in an approximately vertical position when so desired instead of -in the inclined position shown in' Fig. 2, as is sometimes desirable. It will be seen that if the casing be arranged vertically and its front wall be of the same length as its rearpone it will be impracticable to set such rear wall close to the couch-roll Without causing the front wall to bind upon such roll. It is to avoid this binding that I form the front wall as shown and before described.
By the use of the cross-beam as a support for the casing I secure a double advantage by providing a support to which the casing may vbe secured at one side, so its ends are open and unobstructed, and by enabling the casing to be secured at close intervals to the support throughout its length in order to avoid any springing orbending of the casing and so hold the strip properly to its work.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters IOO and open at the end and unobstructed at such end whereby the guard-board strip may be inserted in and removed endwise from said casing, the guard-board strip, the pressurescrews engaging said strip, and a support for the said casing, which support forms no obstruction to the open end of the casing substantially as described.
2. The herein-described improvement in paper-machines consisting of the top couchroll, the beam extending longitudinally above the said roll, the casing having in its under side a recess opening toward said roll and open at the end and unobstructed at such end whereby the guard-board strip may be inscrted in and removed endwise from said casing, the guard board strip, the pressurescrews engaging said strip, and fastenings securing said casing, at close intervals to the beam whereby to prevent any springing of the casing toward or from the roll and whereby the casing is secured in such manner that its open end is left unobstructed for the endwise insertion and removal of the guard-board strip substantially as shown and described.
3. The improvement in paper machines herein described comprising the top couchroll, the beam extended above said roll in the direction of length thereof, the casing having in its under side a recess open toward the top couch-roll and open at its end, said casing being provided in its top with openings for the set-screws and having above said recess and between the set-screw openings transverse holes for the fastening-bolts, the fastening-bolts securing the casing to the beam and passed through said transverse openings in the casing whereby the casing is secured at close intervals and its end is left unobstructed, and the guard-board strip and setscrews substantially as shown and described.
