Application filed July 2, 1904. Serial lilo. 215,139.
To (Md who/1t 11/; may concern.-
.lie it known that l, Jenn A. l'lI'LL, of Lafayette, county of Ti ppecanoe, and State of lndiana, have invented a certain new and useful UUtLQPlHOLHl for l;"aper-l'langers; and 1 do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact descriptiol'i thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. in which like numerals refer to like parts.
The object of this invention is to improve the construction of cutter-boards for paperhangers.
The object is to make a cutter-board that is considerably more lasting, and more convenient and at the same time lirmer than the oiitterdmards in general use.
.lh'oadly speaking. these objects are acconr plished by mounting a zinc strip upon a me tallic base. By surrouiuling a metallic base snch. for 0X:L]'fl])l(5., as a strip of galvanized ironavith a layer of zinc a complete and permanent cutter-board is provided with a zinc cuttiiig-surl'aec on each side and with a metal base for supporting said CHttll'lg-Sljll face.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be urnlerstoml from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claims.
in the drawings, lfigure l is a perspective view of the cutter-board with a straight-edge and cutter thereon. showing the position of the cntter-board while in use. lliie'. E2 is a transverse section of the cutter-board, drawn on an enlarged scale.
Iln detail .10 is a paper-cutter and 11 a straight-edge or guidingstrip for the cutter. The knife .12 of the cutter rolls upon and cuts the sheet of paper beneath the straight-edge or guide for the cutter and upon the cuttingboard below. The cutting-board, therefore. serves as a base or solid smooth support upon which the paper may be cut by the rotary knife passing over it. The cutting-board consists of a strip 15 of metal preferably flexible and resilient, like galvanized iron, about eight feet long and four inches wide. A layer 16 of zinc is superimposed upon the metal strip and yu-eferably surrounds it, so that there will be a zinc layer on both sides there of. l have mounted the layer of zinc on the metal strip by cutting a strip of zinc of about the same dimensions as the strip of galvanized iron and placing upon the hardanetal strip and cutting another strip of zinc wider than the first and placing;- it under the strip of iron and bending the lateral edges over the edges of the strip of iron and the strip of zinc above and securingtheoverlapping edges of the wide strip of zinc to the strip of zinc below. in this way the layer of zinc surrounds the hard-metal strip like an envelop and furnishes two cutti ne surfaces in addition to (mvering the hard-metal plate. The hardmetal plate or base prevents the zinc yield ing under the pressure of the cutter. 11; is this yielding of the zinc under the pressure of the cutter when the zinc is placed on a yielding base, such as a wooden base, that causes the knife to cut tl'irough the zinc and soon to destroy the zinc, because it became slit in many places. Zinc secured on a soft and yielding base must be renewed very frequently. With this cutiter-board the knife of the cutter also cuts the paper i'nore readily, as the zinc does not buckle or sink into the wood under it. \Vith a lewd-metal base the knife does not get through the zinc.
l/V hat ll claim as my invention, and desire to secure by lluetters l atent, is-- l. The combination with a straight-edge and a pa wr-cuttei' for paper-hangers, of a cutter-board upon which the straight-edge may be placed consisting of a flexible and resilient hard-metal piece with a layer of zinc secured thereon.
2. The combination with a straight-edge and a uwer-cutter for pa er-hangers, of a cutter-board upon which the straight-edge may be placed consisting of a flexible and resilicnt strip of hard metal, and a layer of zinc enveloping said strip, substantially as set forth.
in witness whereof I have hereunto aflixed my signature in the presence of the witnesses herein named.
JOHN A. llllLlll.
