MUSIG SHEET HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED APR.16.1907.
HE NORRIS PETERS 50-, wnsumcrqnr n FRANK W. BARROWS, OF CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS;
MUSIC-SHEET HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent. 4
Application filed April 16. 1907- Serial No. 368,528.
Patented Dec. 10, 1907.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK W. BARROWS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Music- Sheet Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the general style of music-sheet holders illustrated and described in the Letters Patent of the United States numbered 830,197, and granted to me September 4, 1906, and is intended to be an improvement on the device described in the. said Letters Patent.
My present invention has for its principal object to so construct the music sheet holder that it-will guard and protect the sheets of music from rain or snow, and thus prevent injury thereto, when the 'device is being used in the open air, as in marches,
open-air concerts, etc.
The nature of the invention is fully described in detail below, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of my improved music-sheet holder, a portion being broken off, and a number of sheets being shown in position. taken on line 22, Fig. 1, looking toward the left.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
a represents the main portion of the back of a rectangular casing provided at its lower edge with forwardly and upwardly projecting lips I; located on opposite sides of the center of the lower edge of said back, and at a sufiicient distance from said center to allow space for the flat, narrow plate d to extend centrally up against the front surface of the back a, as indicated in full lines in Fig. 2 and in full and dotted lines in Fig. 1, said plate being provided at its lower end with a rigid holder 6. The portion of the rear surface of the plate below the back is provided with a rigid bracket 9 to whose outer end is pivoted at h a clamp is which bears against the rear side of the back. The portions a, 6., e, g, h
Fig. 2 is a cross vertical section The sheets of music n he against the front surface of the back and that of the plate (2, and are supported by the lips I). The left edges of the sheets are pushed against the forwardly and inwardly extending small lip p, which extends from the central portion of the left edge of the back, and the right edges of the sheets are provided with designating tabs 1' which extend beyond said edges. I
From the entire length. of the upper edge of the back a there extends forward at substantially right angles therewith a broad flange 8 which constitutes a flat roof, and integral with said flange is a downwardly extending guard 25, which is preferably at right angles with the roof and may be as broad as desired,
provided it does not hide the notes on the sheets of music. This roof and guard serve to protect the music-sheets from rain or snow when the device is in use in the open air.
The small lip 19 is placed at the left edge of the back, and the tabs at the right edge of the sheets, in order that the sheets may be inserted and withdrawn horizontally under the protecting roof and behind the guard. A suitable spring clamp w is secured at yto the rear side of the back, and extends forward under the lower edge of the back and upward, serving to hold the sheets of music in place as they are supported on opposite sides of the plate (1 by the lips I).
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isv In a music-sheet holder, a back, lips extending forward and upward from the lower edge of the back on opposite sides of the center for supporting the sheets of music, a short lip extending forward and inward from substantially the central portion of one side edge of the back, and a roof extending forward from the upper edge of the back and adapted to rotect the music-sheets from rain or snow.
11 testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRANK w. BARROWS.
