INVENTOR.

heit@ VARIABLE SIGN.
Application led May 3,
To all w/tom t may concern Be it lrnown that I, ROBERT L. Kun-Vianen,
a citizen of the United States, residing` at Hempstead, in the county of lNaller and o State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Variable Sign, of which the following is a specification. This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a variable sign.
One object of the invention is to provide a sign of the character described, specially adapted to mark graves, and to indicate the name and other data relative to the deceased.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved form of sign support adapted to carry removable lettered or numbered blocks whereby the data, carried by the sign, may be easily varied.
The sign, while specially designed for graves, may also be used on hearses, or in stores, shops, or at other places where a variable sign may be required.
lVth the above and other objects in view 1 this invention relates to certain novel features of construction, arrangement of parts and use, an example of which is given in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a front elevation of the sign.
Figure 2 is an end view of the supporting brace, and
Figure 3 is an edge view.
Referring now more particularly to the porting brace, preferably formed of sheet metal in the form of a channel iron.
Secured to this support there is a supporting plate 2 whose face is formed with transverse channels 3, 4 and 5. These channels may be formed in any desired manner. As shown, the upper and lower edges of the plate 2 are upturned and crimped over, and opposite said upturned edges and spaced therefrom there are the respective flanges 6 and 7, secured to said plate and whose free edges are crimped, or turned .over toward said respective upturned edges of the plate. The intermediate channel 4 is formed by the upstanding flanges 8 and 9 which drawings, the numeral 1 designates a sup- 1921. Serial No. 466,543.
secured to the plate 2 and spaced apart and whose edges are crimped or turned over toward each other.
Lettered or numbered blocks 10 are fitted endwise into said channels and it is obvious that any name or other data may be thus applied to the support, and may also be readily changed as desired.
Three channels, for the blocks, have been provided as these will usually be required to contain sufiicient data, although the number may be varied, as desired.
The plate 2 has transverse slots 11 cut therethrough opposite the channels and on each side of the support 1. When the blocks are properly located in their respective channels they are secured therein by the end blocks 12, 19 which have the bolts 13 passing therethrough and also through the slots l1 and being secured therein by means of the nuts 14C. These end blocks may be easily adjusted along the slots 11 in accordance with the necessities of the case. lVhen it is desired to remove the blocks from any channel one of the end blocks thereof may be removed and the blocks 10 then easily taken out and changed as desired.
The plate 2 is secured to the support 1 in any manner desired, as by bolts or screws, and said support extends up above the plate and its upper end forms a convenient anchor for the attachment of any ornamental figure thereto.
lVhat I claim is A variable' sign including a support, a plate attached thereto whose upper and lower edges are turned outwardly at right angles to the plate, the edges of said outturned portions being overturned into parallel relation with said plate, ianges secured to said plate and opposing and spaced from said respective outturned portions, said flanges standing at right angles to the plate and having their free edges overturned at right angles toward the corresponding overturned edges of said outstanding portions of said plate, thus forming upper and lower channels, outstanding ianges fastened to said plate and being spaced apart and spaced from said irst mentioned flanges and havsecuring said bolts to said plate. l0 ing their free edges overturned toward each In testimony Whereo1 I have signed my other forming an intermediate channel, sign name to this specification in the presence ot' Carrying blocks itted into the respective two subscribing Witnesses.
channels, each channel having end slots through said plate, end blocks between which ROBERT L. KILPATRICK. the sign carrying blocks are located, end lVitnesses: bolts fastened to the end blocks and passing H. M. AMBLER,
through said slots and means for adjustably ADA THOMAS.
