EMANUEL ARCH COHEN AND CYRUS C. COLYER, OF PITTSBURGH. PENNSYLVANIA.
AUTOMOBILE-MAT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 113, 1917.
Application filed March 14, 1916. Serial No. 8%,216.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, EMANUEL ARCH COHEN and CYRUS C. CoLYER, citizens of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful provide a device which will prevent the pas sage of warm or cold air through the foot board of a motor vehicle thereby protecting the feet and legs of a driver Another object of the invention is to provide a device which may be readily attached or detached at the desire of the user.
A, still further object of the invention is to provide a device which is reinforced around its edges and in which a strip of metal or other suitable stiffening material may be embedded.
Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in thefollowing specification and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a face view of the protector constructed in accordance with this invention.
\ Fig. 2 illustrates the device in use.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary sec tional view on line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view on line H of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional view on line 55 of Fig. 1, and
- Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 4: illustrating the device made without the use of the reinforcing strip.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 designates the body of the device consisting of a sheet of rubber or other suitable material forming a mat. This body is \provided with suitable openings 2 which may be positioned at desirable points therein and are surrounded by the beads 3. Formed on the edges of the body 1 are suitable beads 4 having embedded therein suitable reinforcing strips 5 and formed along the outer edges of the heads 4 are suitable flanges 6.
The openings 2 are adapted for the reception of the various controlling pedals of the vehicle on which the device is used and it will be noted that the mat or body 1 forms a cover for the pedal board or foot board as clearly shownin Fig. 2. In order to provide a means for holding the device in place the beads 4 are formed at their corners with suitable openings 7 for the re ception of the buttons 8 having shanks 9 which extend into the flodr boards or foot boards and hold the buttons in place.
It will be seen upon reference to Fig. 3 that the reinforcing strips 5 are formed at suitable points with enlarged openings 10 which register with the openings 7 and are adapted to permit the passage of the" head of the buttons 8 through the body.
In the modified form of the invention illustrated in Fig. 6 the body of the mat is designated by the numeral 11 and is constructed in a manner similar to the body 1 and is formed at its edges with the beads 12 having suitable flanges formed on their edges. In this modified form it will be noted that the reinforcing strip is eliminated and it will be understood that the device may be made either with or without this strip without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that such changes may be made in the combination and arrangement of parts as will fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is 1. A mat of the class described comprising a body formed of rubber, said body having a plurality of pedal receiving apertures therein, beads reinforcing the walls of the apertures, beads formed around the edges of the mat on opposite sides thereof to reinforce the same, said last named beads having apertures therein for the reception of attaching bolts by which the device is secured in place in the motor vehicle, and reinforcing strips extending through the last naiped beads and formed on the edge of the ma 2. A mat of the class described comprislng a rectangular rubber body, said body having a plurality of pedal receiving apertures therein, beads reinforcing the walls of the apertures, beads extending around the pe riphery of the mat, the last namedbeadshav- In testimony whereof We aifix our signa- Lng epertliires }therein for thbe receptiim of tures in presence of two witnesses.
olts so t at t e same may e secure y attached to the upper face of the floor board of v C a motor vehicle, and reinforcing strips extending through the heads at the edges of Witnesses: the mat reinforcing the same when the at- B; .HIMMELRICH, taching means is placed therein. W. N. OWINGS.,
