Specification of Letters Eatent.
Patentedlllcc, 7, M11755.
Application filed December 30, 1911. Seriali louiflfifil.
To aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, lVILLiAV'G. Rason, a citizen of the United States, residing at Burlington, in the county of Racine and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inChauifeui- Robes, of which the following is a specific cation, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part thereof.
This invention relates to robes designed for the use of drivers of motor cars. 0 Its main objects are to protect the feet of automobile drivers from the weather, cold and wet; to hold such robes securely in place, and at the same time to avoid interference with the operation of the foot levers or pedals by which the running of such vehicles is controlled.
It consists in the peculiar construction of. such robes and in the peculiar arrangement and combination of the parts of which they are composed as hereinafter particularly described and pointed out in the appended claims.
la the accompanying drawing like char-- actors designate the same parts in thesevera]. figures.
Figure 1 is an inside view ofa robe spread flat and cmbodying the invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same illustrating the manner of applying it to and using it on an autol'nobile; Fin". 3 is an inside view of the foot matdetached from the robe; and Fig. l is a longitudinal vertical section of the foot mat and adjacent portion of the robe.
The body a of the robe may be made of any suitable fabric or material such as is ordinarily employed in the manufacture of lap robes, especially for fall and winter use.
It is provided on the inner side adjacent to its lower edge with a foot mat b, which is stitched or otherwise inseparably attached along its front edge and part Way along its sides, to the body of the robe, so as to form a pocketfor the feet. At the'ends of the stitching by which the mat is attached at the sides to the body of the robe it maybe further or additionally secured thereto by metal rivets, staples or fastenings c, as shown in Fig. 1.
The mat is formed with a transverse slit or opening sage upwardly (Z for the pas tlierethrough of one or more foot 181'818 01 pedals c, with which an automobile or motor car is ordinarily provided.
'lhcmat may be madc'of the same material as the body of the robe, and when so made, especially if the material is lightor very flexible, to insure its lying flat bu the foot board and, kecpingits place around the pedal or pedals and to reinforce it around the slit or opening through which the pedal or pedals pass, it is pi efcrablv provided with a stiffening or reinforcing sheet or strip f, which may be made ofleather, canvas, rubber-cloth, or the hire and stitched around its edge or otherwise attached to the mat, as shown in, Figs. o and l. This stiffening or reinforcing sheet is preferably applied to the upper side of the mat, as shown, or it may. be applied to the under side thereof. The mature) also be pro vidcd with fastenings for drawing theedges of the slit or opening together and holding them securely in place around the pedal oi pedals 6. Such fastenings may consist as shown in Fig. 3, of eyelets formed or inserted in the mat adjacent to the edges of the slit or opening d, and a lacing, cord or string g drawn alternately through the eyelets on opposite sides of the slit. ,Vhen however, the mat is made of heavy or still material, the reinforcing sheet "or strip f may be omitted, and when it is so made, or is provided with such a reinforcement, the lacing or other fastenings may be dispensed with.
To afford additional warmth or protection for the feet and to reinforce the body 1 i 0 e 'of the robe over the "loot matwhere it is subjected to the greatest wear and strain,
it may be provided with a lining or reinforccment it, consisting of the same or any suitable material, stitched at, its edges or otherwise fastened thereto.
2, with the mat flat on the foot board around the pedal or pedals of a vehicle, it in loses and protects the feet of the driver and will not interfere with the operation of the pedal or pedals, the heels; of the driver resting on the mat, holdingor assisting to hold it in place. 1
The mat f may be made inf'onc piece or continuous with the body a of the robe and of the same or less width, and the opening for the passage of the pedal or edals may be variously formed and located according to the number and arrangement of pedals in cars of dilferent makes; in short, various modifications in minor details of construction' may be inade Without materially affecting the nature or purpose of the device and Without departure from the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim: e
1. A chaufi'eur robe having a flexible foot mat inseparably attached along its front edge to the inner side of the robe adjacent to its lower edge and formed with an opening for the passage of one or more pedals therethrough, said mat being reinforced and stiflened around said opening by a sheet of flexible stiffening material attached thereto.
2. A chaufi'eur robe having a flexible foot mat in separably attached along its front edge to the inner side of the robe adjacent to its lower edge and formed with atrahsverse slit for the passage therethrough of a pedal and with eyelets on opposite sides of the slit, the mat being provided'with a flexible stiffening and reinforcing sheet at tached thereto adjacent to the slit and with a lacing cord passing alternately through eyelets on opposite sides of the slit for drawing andhclding the edges of the slit more or less closely together around the pedal.
In Witness whereof I hureto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
