Description
W. J. CAMERON.
I SAFETY ROBE.
APPLICATION FILED OCT- 4. I919.
1,3 2,525;v Patented Dec. 14, 1920.
Inventor. v William .John Cameron UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VIILLIAM JOHN CAMERON, 0F HOLYOKE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO HOLYOKE PLUSH COMPANY, OF HOLYOKE, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF MAINE.
I SAFETY-ROBE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 4, 1919. Serial No. 328,408.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, WILLIAM JOHN CAM- ERON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Holyoke, county of Hampden, State of Massachusetts, and whose post-oflice address is 15 Carleton St, Holyoke, Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Safety- Robes, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, like characters on the drawing representing like parts.
This invention relates to a robe such as is used for the protection of the occupants of automobiles or other vehicles. These robes are usually of considerable value and are very apt to be stolen from the automobile or vehicle.
The object of the invention is to provide a safety robe or one which cannot be readily removed or stolen from the vehicle.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a plan view of a robe embodying a preferred form of the invention with a fastening device indicated in position.
Fig. 2 isa detail in section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
The robe 1 may be made of any suitable fabric made up in any usual way. In the preferred form illustrated the robe is shown as made of two layers of fabric with the edges inturned and stitched together.
At one edge the robe is formed with a pocket 2 integral with the fabric of the robe and extending longitudinally of the edge. This pocket is formed in any preferred manner and as shown is formed by a line of stitching 3.
A wire is inclosed in and secured against removal from this pocket. The term wire is to include any continuous metal member Whether in the form of a single strand or a number of strands, or' in the :form of a chain. Any article of this sort which would be difficult tocutorsever is to be understood as within this term. This wire may be secured in the pocket in any suitable manner against removal, and as one means for securing this result the wire may be formed with eyes 5 and these eyes are stitched or fastened to the robe. A metal gromet 6 is secured in the body of the robe in the middle thereof and adjacent the edge having the longitudinal pocket.
Any suitable form of fastener such as a chain 7 is passed about the pocketed edge and through the gromet and secured to the vehicle.
Unauthorized removal of the robe from the vehicle will now be so difficult as to afford a very substantial protection to the robe. It will be impossible to cut the gromet out without a serious mutilation of the robe so as to substantially'destroy its value.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A safety robe presenting a pocket integral therewith and extending longitudinally of one edge thereof, a continuous flexible metallic element inclosed in and secured against removal from the pocket, and a gromet secured in the body of the robe adjacent said edge whereby, when a fastener is passed about said edge and through the gromet, the robe cannot be removed from the fastener without serious mutilation of the robe.
2. As a new article of manufacture, an automobile robe provided near its edge with a flexible metal reinforcing and strengthening element and cooperating means associated therewith, whereby the robe may be locked in place on a vehicle to preclude its surreptitious removal.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
WILLIAM JOHN CAMERON.
