D. H. LAWTON.
ARCH SUPPORT.
APPLICATION FILED JULY n, m5.
l ,1 92,2 1 4. Patented July 25, 1916.
ifi; STTES i To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, DANIEL H. LAwToN,
a citizen of the United States, and a resi-` ject the provision of an improved construction of this character which may be readily adjusted to different foot arches and which is simple and eflicient in use.
rIhe invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and in which- 1 Figure l is a bottom plan view of arch support embodying my invention, Fig. 2, a side elevation thereof with the cover plate removed, Fig. 3, an enlarged section taken on line 3 8 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4, a bottom plan view of a modified form ofv construction.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in Figs. l, 2 and 3 comprises an upwardly bowedarch plate 5 and a supple-l mental reinforcing plate 6 arranged thereunder. Adjacent its front end plate 5 is provided with a depending transversely .1 headed stud 7 and thefplate 6 is provided with a plurality of longitudinally elongated slots 8 located at different longitudinal positions in plate 6 and adapted to pass over headed studs 7 -when plate 6 islswung to a position substantially at right angles to that indicated in Fig. l. This arrangement effects a detachably adjustable pivotal connection between the two plates which permits of the ready removal of plate 6 so that y the arch in plateV 5 may be adjusted. Adjacent its rear end plate 5 is provided with depending longitudinally headed studs 9 and 10 and plate 6 is provided with a corresponding key hole slot 11 adapted to pass over and engage stud 9 and a notch l2 at one edge adapted to engage stud l0. The arrangement is such that plate 7 v may be swung readily until the large portion of slot 11 registers withhead 9 when said slot may be passed over said studand a slight movement will securely engage the small portion of `Specification of Letters Patent.

slot ll under the head of stud 9 and notch l2 under the head of stud l0. To further secure the detachable connection thus effected, I` also provide a bead 13 which is struck from the body 5 in position to engage against the corresponding edge of plate 6 when such engagement is effected with said studs. To remove plate 6 all that is necessary is to move the same slightly laterally against the resistance of bead 13 to bring the enlarged portion of slot 11 in registration with slot 9 when plate 6 may be flexed sufficiently to pass over said stud andentirely removed as explained above. When plate 5 is bent to dilferent curvatures of arch the longitudinal distances between studs 7 and the studs 9 and l0 are necessarily varied,
so that by locating the slots 8 at different longitudinal positions in slot ll provision is made for these varying positions and thus provision is made for varying the curvature of the arch in each plate when desired. The top plate 5 is covered with the usual leather cover plate to protect the foot from injury or irritation from contact therewith. The construction disclosed is a simple and etlicient one for the purpose and will aiiord sufficient resiliency to render the use thereof comfortable.
In the modified form of construction illustrated in Fig. 4 the stud 7 and slots 8 have been omitted, otherwise the construction being identical with that previously described. This modiied form of construction furnishes a simpler and more economical construction which is suitable for some purposes but is not considered quite as eiiective although ,it may be manufactured at lessr cost.
While I have illustrated and described the `preferred forms of construction for carryclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. An arch support comprising an upwardly bowed arch plate; al supplemental ing a key hole slot in the body of said supplemental plate and a notch in one edge thereof both engaging said studs; and a yielding stop member on said bowed plate engaging an edge of said supplemental plate to yieldingly hold said slot and notch in engagement with said studs, substantially as described.
2. An arch support comprising an upwardly bowed arch plate; a supplemental plate arranged thereunder; headedstuds on the under side of said bowed plate, there being a key hole slot in the body of said supplemental plate and a notch in one edge thereof both engaging said studs; and a yielding stop bead on said bowed plate engaging an edge of said supplemental plate to yieldingly hold said slot and notch in engagement with said studs, substant-ially as described.
3. An arch support comprising an upwardly bowed arch plate; a supplemental plate arranged thereunder; laterally shifta'ble fastenings between said plates; and a stop member on said bowed plate engaging said supplemental plate to yieldingly hold said fastenings together, substantially as described.
4L. An arch support comprising an upwardly bowed arch plate; a supplemental plate arranged thereunder; laterally shiftable fastenings between said plate, and a stop bead on said bowed plate engaging said supplemental plate to -yieldingly hold said fastenings together, substantially as described.
5. An arch support comprising an upwardly bowed rarch plate; a supplemental plate arranged thereunder; headed studs on the under side of said bowed plate adjacent one end thereof, there being a key hole slot in the body of said supplemental plate and a notch in one edge thereof both engaging said studs; and a headed stud on the under side of said bowed plate adjacent the other end thereof, there being a plurality of longitudinally elongated slots in the corresponding end of said supplemental plate located at different longitudinal positions Copies of this patent may be obtained for and adapted to engage said last mentioned stud, substantially as described.
6. An arch support comprising an upwardly bowed arch plate; a supplemental plate arranged thereunder; headed studs on the under side of said bowed plate adjacent one end thereof, there being a key hole slot in the body of said supplemental plate and a notch in one edge thereof both engaging said studs; a headed st-ud on the under side of said bowed plate adjacent the other end thereof, there being a plurality of longitudinally elongated slots in the corresponding end of said supplemental plate located at different longitudinal positions and adapted to engage said last mentioned stud; and a yielding stop member on said bowed ,plate engaging an edge ofv said supplemental plate to yieldingly hold said slot and notch in engagement with said studs,`substantially as described.v
7. yAn arch support comprising an upwardly bowed arch plate; a supplemental plate arranged thereunder; headed studs on the under side'of said bowed plate adjacent one end thereof; there being a key hole slot in the body of said supplemental plate and a notch in one edge thereof both engaging said studs; a headed stud on theunder side of said bowed plate adjacent the other end thereof, there being a plurality of longitudinally elongated slots in the corresponding end of said supplemental plate located at different longitudinal positions and adapted to engage said last mentioned stud; and a stop bead on said bowedv plate engaging an edge of said supplemental plate to yieldv ingly hold said slot and notch in engagementV ywith said studs, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof l have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
