Be it known that I, GIOVANNI GIOVANA, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Heels for Shoes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.

My invention relates to improvements in shoes, and the-same has for its object more particularly to provide a shoe whereof the eel is so constructed that a portion thereof may be readily attached to or removed from the remainder thereof when it is desired to change the character of the substance comprising the samedfor example, from leather to rubber, or vice versa-or to change the detachable heel portion from one shoe to the oth er when the same becomes worn at one side or edge only.

To the attainment of the foregoing objects and ends invention consists in the novel details of construction and in the combination, connection, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, and then pointed out in the claims.

In' the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Whereinrlike numerals of reference indicate like parts, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a shoe, showing a heel constructed according` to and embodying my invention applied thereto; Fig. 2, a partial side view with the heel portion partly broken away and in section; Fig. 3, an enlarged detail face view of the heel with the detachable portion removed therefrom; Fig. 4, an enarged detail face view showing the reverse side of the detachable heel portion, and Fig. 5 an enlargeddetail section taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. 3 and showing the detachable portion applied.

In said crawings, 10 designates a shoe of the usual general construction provided with a heel 1.1, consisting of a fixed portion 12 and a detachable lower portion or lifts 13. The fixed portion 12 of the heel, which may be formed of a single piece of material or a plurality of lifts, has embedded therein above its lowermost layer or cover-section 14 a tube 15, which is arranged parallel with the longitudinal axis of the shoe and has its outer end arranged flush with the forward edge of the heel and its inner end provided with ears 16 16 and passed through an ape-rture in a securing-spur 17, adapted to be driven into the fixed heel portion 14 of the heel, the inner end of the tube 15 being held in position within the heel portion 14 by means of the ears 16 16, which are adapted to be bent outwardly, as shown at Fig. 3, and 18 denotes a bolt arranged within the tube 15 and provided at its projecting end with a head or button 18.

Adjacent to the rear end of the heel in the portion 14 is provided a recess 19, which communicates with the open inner end of the tube 15 and is covered by a plate 20, which is countersunk in the heel portion 14 and secured thereto by screws 21 and provided with a transverse slit or opening 22. and adjacent to the rear end-of the heel portion 14 are provided projecting studs or gibs 23, and adjacent to the forward end of said heel portion 14 are provided rearwardly and upwardly inclined openings 24 24. The detachable heel portion. 1.3 is provided at and near its rear end with recesses 25 25, adapted to receive the ends of the studs or gibs23, and a staple or loop 26, adapted to be passed through the slot in the plate 20 and engaged by the inner end of the bolt 18. At the forward end of said portion 13 are secured upwardly and rearwardly extending studs or pins 27, which are adapted to be fitted into the inclined openings 24 24 in the fixed heel portion 12.

28 denotes the lowermost lift of the detachable section 12, which may be made of leather or rubber or any other desired material and secured to said section 12 by nailing, cementing, or by screws 29, as shown in the drawings.

To apply the detachable section 13, it simply becomes necessary to insert the ends of the inclined studs or pins 27 of the detachable portion 13 into the inclined openings 24 24 in the fixed heel portion 12 until the end of the staple 26 is opposite the slot 22 and the ends of the studs 23 23 opposite the recesses 25 25, and thence force the portion 13 against the portion 12 until the studs 23 23 are completely within the recesses 25 25 and the staple 26. in position Within the recess 19, and thence push in the bolt 18, as shown at Fig. 5. The material of the portion 13 being quite flexible permits the part 13 to be readily applied to the part 12.

the scope of the invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. In a shoe, a heel comprising a fiXed portion having a recess therein, a slotted plate secured over said recess, a tubular sleeve (ommunicating at one end with said recess, a bolt slidably arranged Within said sleeve and adapted to be projected into said recess, and a detachable portion having a loop member thereon adapted to enter said slotted plate and the recess therebelow and be engaged by said bolt to hold said detachable portion in position upon said. fixed portion, substantially as specified.

2. In a shoe, a heel comprising a fixed portion having a recess therein adjacent to its rear end, a slotted' plate secured over said recess, studs arranged adjacent 4to said rear i end, a sleeve embedded in said fixed portion j and extending from said. recess to the front i edge of the heel, a spur for securing said sleeve Within said fixed portion, a bolt slidably arranged within said sleeve, and provided at its ont-er projecting end with a head, inclined apertures arranged in said fixed portion adjacent to its front edge, and a detachable portion having a staple secured near its rear end adapted to enter the recess in the fixed portion and be engaged by the bolt therein, circular recesses adjacent thereto, and inclined pins at its forward end adapted to be fitted into the inclined openings in the fixed portion, substantially as specified.
