ADOLPI-I HANSEN, OF BROOKLYN, NEXV YORK.
S H O E T I P SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 446,146, dated February 10, 1891.
Application filed November 4, 1890- Serial No, 370,312. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ADOLPH HANSEN, of 3rooklyn,in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoe-Tips; and I do" hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in the application of metallic tips to shoes, and has for its object to provide for the ready attachment of ornamental tips to shoes, slippers, dcc, in manner to permit of their ready detachment.
It consists in the combination, with a metallic shoe-tip, of devices, substantially as is hereinafter described and claimed, for the attachment of the tip to a boot, shoe, or slipper.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a ladys slipper fitted with my improved tip; Fig. 2, a central vertical section in line a; aat the toe of the slipper; Fig. 3, atransverse section in line y y of Fig. 2; Fig. 4, an end or interior View of the tip detached from the slipper; Fig. 5, a detail View of the locking-strip by which the tip is confined on the slipper, and Fig. 6 a horizontal section in line .2 z of Fig.
The tip A consists of a shell or casing made of thin sheet metal or of hard rubber or leather or other suitable hard, light, durable material capable of being embossed, engraved, or otherwise ornamented. This shell or casing, hereinafter termed the tip, is fashioned to conform with exactitude to the shape of the toe of the boot, shoe, or slipper to which it is to be attached, being made as nearly as possible a counterpart thereof in form, so as to fit neatly over and upon the upper part of the toe and embrace the same closely above the sole O. The bottom of the tip is left open, andits lower edge e is adapted to enter and be concealed in the joint between the upper and sole of the slipper B, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3.
A longitudinal strip F,having an offset m m at each end thereof, (see Figs. 3, 4, and 6,) is secured upon each side of the inner face of permit these offsets m m to project through the same when the tip is properly fitted thereon, and the offsets will thereupon operate to prevent the tip from slippingautomatically forward off of the toe.
To further insure the fastening of the tip,
a thin elastic locking plate or strip G is provided, of a form to correspond with the form of the inner face of the tip A, on a line with its offsets m m, and having recesses or apertures 4m, therein (see Fig. 5) to register with said offsets m, so that the latter may be made to enter the same. hen the tip A has been fitted upon the toe of the slipper B, with its offsets m m projecting inward through the apertures n n in the toe, the locking-plate G is inserted'within the toe and sprung over the projecting offsets so as to engage the same. The tip is thus locked by means of the plate G, and the plate serves also to cover-the ends of the offsets m, so that they will not prove objectionable to the wearer. The elasticity of the locking-plate G permits it not only to be readilysprung upon the offsets of the tip within the toe of the boot, shoe, or slipper to which the tip is applied, but also to be readily detached when it is desired to remove the tip. The tip thus readily attached to and detached from the toe of a boot, shoe, or slipper serves as a protection therefor and is not only useful as a guard, but also maybe made a Very neat and attractive ornament for the toe, for which purpose it will be found especially desirable in connection withladies dancing-slippers.
I claim as my inventiou,
1. The combination, in a detachable tip for boots, shoes, or slippers, of an outer shell or casing conforming to the upper of the toe and having inwardly projecting offsets, and a separable locking plate or strip conforming to the inner face of the tip and recessed or perforated to engage said offsets and adapted to be applied Within the shoe, substantially in -the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. The combination, with a boot, shoe, or slipper, of a tip or covering-plate for the toe having offsets upon its inner side projecting through perforations in the toe, and a looking-plate fitted Within the toe'to engage the inwardly-projecting offsets, substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set 10 forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ADOLPl-I HANSEN.
