his Elm UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREE!) H. HEISE, OF MANSON, IOWA.
CUPOLA.
Application filed October 17, 1913.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRED H. Hnisn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Manson, in the county of Calhoun and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cupolas, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a guard or cover for the opening of a corn bin that admits the corn or other material to the bin.
The object of this invention is to provide a cover of the kind above described that will efiiciently keep rain or other foreign matter from enterin the bin.
Another 0 ject of this invention is the production of a strong and durable cover that will stand the wear in placing the same over and removing it from the opening in the bin.
With these and other objects in view, this invention consists of certain novel combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing :-Figure 1 is a perspective view of the cover in engagement with a corn bin. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the improved cover. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective View of one corner of the cover. Fig. 4: is a perspective view of the bottom plate or protector for the opening of the corn bin. Fig. 5 is a frag mentary view of one corner of the blank from which the sections are formed. Fig. 6 is a detailed perspective view of a portion of one of the sections of the cover showing a hinge ear secured thereto. Fig. 7 is a detailed perspective view of a portion of the other section from that shown in Fig. 6 showing a hinge ear secured thereto.
Referring to the parts by reference numerals 1 denotes an ordinary corn bin provided with the usual opening or aperture 11 to admit corn or the material to said bin. Positioned at the bottom edges of the opening or aperture 11 is a protector plate 12 and secured under the shingles of the bin roof along the side edges of the opening 11 are side protector plates 13. Both the side protector plates 13 and the bottom protector plates 12 are provided with up-turned flanges 14 running longitudinally their lengths. The fiat or body portion of the bottom protector plates 12 has an enlarged portion at either end and the side protector Specification of Letters Patent.

pletely surrounding the aperture 11 with a flange. The cover or guard is made of two sections 15 and 16 and are provided with, on the bottom and side edges, outwardly extending flanges 17. Flanges 17 having their bottom upwardly turned upon themselves to form the reinforcing strip 18. This reinforcing strip 18 also passes over the bentover tongue 19, thus making a very substantial and secure corner for the sections. This is clearly illustrated in Fig. 3. The section 15 is provided with a diagonally extending portion or top 20 and has secured on its inner face adjacent the top 20 hinge-ears 21 secured by the rivet 22. The section 16 has turned-over portions forming hingeears and are adapted to fit between the hingeears 21 and the section 15, and through said hinge-ears passes a pin 23 which holds the sections together. Secured adjacent the bottom edge of the sections 15 and 16' are handles 2 1, said handles also carrying a hook adapted to engage an eye positioned in the bin to securely hold the cover thereon.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that a cover for an opening in a corn bin has been provided that is very strong and durable by means of the strip 18 and the bent-over tongue 19. There is also provided a cover that will absolutely exclude water and other foreign matter from the bin. This is accomplished by having the side plates 13 positioned under the shingles adjacent the edge of the opening 11 as far as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1, and by also having the bottom protector plate 12 secured at its ends beneath the shingles by having its body proper above the row of shingles beneath the row to which its ends are secured. The cover or top 20 also insures a watertight cover inasmuch as the same rests snugly against the section 16 when in an extended position as shown in Fig. 1.
It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the form and construction of this invention without departing from the spirit thereof. It is therefore not wished to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described but it is wished to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new, is
A device of the class described comprising a primary and an auxiliary sect-ion, said sections provided With rigid flanges at their side edges, said primary section provided With a diagonally extending overhanging top flange, said top flange being held rigidly in a diagonal position by means of the remaining flanges of said primary section, a plurality of hinge ears fixedly secured Within said primary section adjacent the inner portion of said overhanging top, said auxiliary section provided With integral hinge sleeves formed upon its inner upper portion, said hinged sleeves fitting between the hinge ears of the primary section, a pin passing through said sleeves for hingedly securing said sections together, said diagonal top flange of the primary section overhanging the hinged portion of said section, thereby preventing the Water from passing between the said hinged portions, said diagonal overhanging top constituting a stop for the auxiliary section as the same swings in one direction thereby limiting the swinging of said section for preventing the device from opening beyond a predetermined point.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
