Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 207,929, dated September 10, 1878 application filed February 12, 1878.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EGBERT WooLsoN, of Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shear-Rests; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to movable or changeable rests, or so-called chain-rests, used in'machines for shearing cloth, in combination with the stationary rest, against which the cutting-knives bear, for the purpose of forming an adjustable or varying rest that will accommodate different widths of cloth, and adapt itself to the swaying of the cloth as it passes to the cutters; and it consists in certain improvements in the movable chain-rests patented by Amasa Woolson on May 28,1850, whereby these rests shall present a more even surface to the cloth, and also be less liable to become choked up by the flocks or loose filaments of the nap or pile shorn off by the machine. i

In the drawing hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a top plan of a set or series of my improved rests. Fig. 2 is an end view, and Fig. 3 is a section taken through line 00 w in Fig. 1.

These movable rests are riveted onto a leather band or strap, A, so as to form a chain or series, two such chains being used in a machine, one on each side of the stationary or permanent rest. Any suitable mechanism may be used for the purpose of bringing these rests into or out of play; and as my improvement does not relate to this part of the machine, but to the construction of the rests themselves, I shall not describe it.

The rests, as patented by Amasa I Voolson, consisted of teeth provided with a swallowtail groove on one side, and a correspondinglyshaped tongue or projection on the opposite side; but I have found that teeth of this shape and so fitted together do not Wear evenlythat is to say, the knives bearing against the thin or swallow-tailed edge of the rest or tooth will wearthat side down more in a given time than the opposite thick edge. I have also found that the flocks will lodge in the narrow space between the projecting tongue of a tooth and the swallowtailed groove in the tooth next to it, thereby preventing the easy working of the set or chain of rests.

Hence my improvement consists in forming fiat teeth with concave grooves, one in each edge, and combining them with alternating auxiliary cylindrical teeth, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawing, 13 B, are the flat teeth, having the concave grooves b, one in each edge. 0 C are the alternating cylindrical teeth, of a length corresponding to the teeth B, and of a diameter equal to their thickness. By this construction the wide and narrow teeth B and O alternate, and the body of the rest is of even thickness throughout.

I claim- As an improvement in movable chain-rests for cloth-shearing machines, the combination of the wide teeth B having concave grooves, 11, with the alternating cylindrical teeth 0, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
