UNITED STATES PATENT JOHN H. BRAOKETT, OF WAKEFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
GUlDE FOR DRAWING AND CARDING MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 545,220, dated August 27, 1895. Application filed May 6, 1895. .Serial No. 548,293. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN H. BRAOKETT, of Wakefield, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guides for Drawing and Carding Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a new and improved guide for drawing and carding machines; and it consists in the novel features of construction and relative arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described in the specification, clearly illustrated in the drawings, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying sheet of drawings, forming part of this application, in which like characters indicate like parts wherever they occur.
In the drawings, Figure I shows in vertical longitudinal section a portion of a machine with my improved guide attached thereto. Fig. 2 represents a front elevation of my improved guide, showing two rows of staggered openings. Fig. 3 represents a rear elevation of my improved guide, showing two rows of staggered openings and the interposed web.
(1 represents so much of a drawing-machine as is necessary to show in order to illustrate my invention. a are the drawing-rolls. a is the coiler; a the slubbing; M, the roller over which the slubbing passes from the cam (not shown) to the drawing-rolls a All of these parts are of the ordinary construction and arrangement.
Great inconvenience and difficulty have been experienced in keeping the slubbings or drawings separate between the roller o and the drawing-rolls a They become entangled, and unless closely watched it is difficult to tell whether one or more of them has been broken. In my invention these difficulties are overcome, the slubbings or drawings are kept separate from one another, are guided accurately between the drawing rolls, and are so arranged that the operator can tell at a glance whether any particular slubbing has broken. Should a slubbing become broken,
it can be quickly and readily replaced in its proper position. v
While my invention may be carried out in several ways, I prefer the construction shown in the drawings, in which my improved guide is shown as made up of a member I), provided with two rows of staggered openings f and d. This member or plate is provided with a rabbeted recess 12 arranged to fitupon some pref erably stationary part of the machine and be secured thereto by bolts h. The sides of theseopenings are beveled, as shown, in order to present as little obstacle as possible for the passage of the slubbings or drawings.
T) represents a web secured tothe plate or member b, between the openings f and d, and projected substantially at right angles to said member or plate on the side of the member or plate next to the drawing-rolls, as shown, in order to keep the slubbings a in the upper and lower series of openings separate from each other until just before they enter the rolls. The plate and web may be made of any material, but I prefer for the sake of cheapness and lightness to use wood.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have invented a simple and efficient device for the purpose in hand whereby undue wear or contact of the slubbings is prevented, whereby the slubbings are kept separate from one another, and whereby on the breakage or failure of a slubbing this fact can be readily discerned and the slubbing inserted through its proper opening.
Having thus explained the nature of my invention and described a way of constructing and using the same, though without attempting to set forth all of the forms in which it may be made or all of the modes of its use, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An improved guide for drawing and carding machines, comprising in its construction a member or plate b, said member being provided with an upper and alower row of openings d and f, arranged in a staggered manner, and a web secured to said member between said openings, substantially as and for the purpose se forth.
2. In a awing machine the combination of the rons, a guide comprising in its construetion a member Or plate, b said member name to this specification, in the presence of being providedrwith two rows of openings, two subscribing witnesses, this 26th day of and a web secured to said member between April, A. D. 1895.
said openings on the side next to the draw- JOHN H. BRACKETT. 5 ing rolls, substantially as and for the purpose Witnesses:
set; forth. WALTER N. BRACKETT,
In testimony whereof I have signed my 1 CHESTER W. EATON.
