Description

a. M. TAYLOR.
Cotton Bale-Ties.
Patented Dec. 22
P- H 5 .E w W 761E GRAPH: CO- =HGTO-LITH.39& I PARK PLACEJLYA UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROLLIN M. TAYLOR, OF MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO W. M. SMITH, W'. L. SOOTT, AND J. W. JEFFERSON.
IMPROVEMENT IN COTTON-BALE TIES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,145, dated December 22, 1874; application filed September 14, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, Roman M. TAYLOR, of Memphis, Shelby county, State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bale-Ties; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the lower side of my improved fastening. Fig. 2 is a like View of a similar link in common use. Figs. 3 and 4 are perspective views, respectively, of the lower and upper sides of my link as applied to a confining-band and Fig. 5 shows said fastening in position upon a bale of cotton.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
The design of my invention is to produce a wire fastening for the confining-bands of cotton and other bales, which shall not be liable to disengagement by the expansive force of the bale; and it consists in a wire bale-tie provided with an opening for the inward passage of the doubled end of a band, and having one or both of its ends turned downward in a line perpendicular to the plane of said tie, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specitied.
In the annexed drawing, A represents my bale-tie, constructed of wire in the general form of a parallelogram with one of its sides made double, as shown. One end, a, of the wire is turned at a right angle to the plane of the tie, while the opposite end, a, of said wire is either turned outward in a line with said end, a, or is turned inward in a line with the plane of said tie, and at a right angle to the arm of which it forms a part.
The tie thus constructed has substantially the same interior dimensions as the width of the usual bands employed for confining bales, and is used 'as follows One end of a band, B, is doubled back, and the tie A placed within the loop I) thus formed, the latter embracing said tie between said bent ends a and a.
the side of said tie opposite to its double open side. The band is then passed around a bale, C, while the latter is under pressure, its free end is bent into the form of a loop, I), and said loop caused to engage with the tie A by turning the latter to one side until the end a will enter said loop, then turning said tie in an opposite direction until its opposite end will enter, and then turning it back again, so as to bring said loop into the position shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and cause it to embrace both armqsjlof 1e inward-turned ends of the band B and the downward-turned ends of the tie A are to be placed next to the bale G, which latter, by expansion, will press said band ends firmly against said band and prevent slipping, and will cause said downward-turned end or ends of said tie to be so firmly embedded within said bale as to render impracticable the straightening out of the wire composing said tie, it being necessary that said tie ends should move over the surface of the bale before changing their position with relation to the remaining portions of said tie.
I am aware of the patent of Jas. W. Truman, dated September 24, 1867, and do not claim his tie, which is shown in Fig. 2 of the annexed drawings.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new 1s A wire bale-tie provided at one side with an opening for the inward passage of the doubled ends of a band, and having one or both of its ends turned downward in a line perpendicular to the plane of said tie, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
It. M. TAYLOR.
