Description

(No Model.) 1 N HOPKINS.
TIE FOR SALES AND PAGKAGES.
No. 326,563. Patented Sept. 22, 1885.
A A A A ATTORNEY 1 UNITED STATES PATEN OFFICE.
I. NEWVTON HOPKINS, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
TIE FOR BALES AND PACKAGES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 326,563, dated September 22, 1885.
Application filed July 2, 1885.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, I. NEWTON HOPKINS, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ties for Bales and Packages, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the fastener. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the fastener applied to a tape. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a modified form of the fastener shown in Fig. 1.
My invention consists of a wire bent twice at right angles, and having formed upon the extremities-thereof pointed hooks capable of engaging the meshes of the tape or band in connection with which the fastener is used.
My improved fastener may be used in connection with an ordinary tape for tying bundles and bales of small dimensions, and may be used in connection with a band of webbing for tying larger bales, and when it' is desirable to use more than two hooked points two or more of the fasteners may be twisted together.
A wire bent twice at right angles with the armsAAparallel with each other, has hooked points a formed upon the extremities of these arms, one point upon each arm, and both turned in the same direction. The part 1), connecting the two arms A A, may be of a length corresponding to the width of tape in connection with which the fastener is used. The fastener is applied to the tape by inserting the hooks first and then pushing the arms A A through the tape until the tape is drawn against the part b. The fasteneris applied to a bale or package by wrapping the tape B around the bundle and bringing the free end thereof into engagement with the pointed hooks am, so that the said hooks enter the meshes of the tape.
When it is desired to use more than two pointed hooks a a two fasteners, formed in the manner already described, are twisted together at c, as shown in Fig. 3. The fastener thus formed is applied to the tape or band in (No model.)
the same manner as the fastener shown in Fig. 1.
The invention herein described is an 1m- .provement upon the device for which Letters formed on one or both of its ends series of hooks. In my present invention, instead of employing a plate upon which series of hooks are formed, I make the body and hooks of the fastener entirely of wire. In my former patent, No. 312,637, I employed a plate having formed on one or both of its ends series of sharp-pointed hooks for engaging the meshes of tape or band employed in connection with the fastener. In my present invention I do not use a plate, but form the hooks and body of the fastener integrally of one or two pieces of wire, thereby producing the device which differs materially from that secured by my former patent. The present invention is adapted for use in connection with paper bands and with tape of closer texture than can be used in connection with my former invention. In view'of these differences of construction .and of application I believe that my improvement possesses sufficient novelty to entitle me to a patent.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. As an improved article of manufacture, a tie-fastener formed of a wire bent twice at right angles and having pointed hooks formed upon the extremities thereof, substantially as herein specified.
2. The combination, with a fastener formed of a wire bent twice at right angles and having pointed hooks formed on the extremities thereof, of a tape or band, B, received on'the parallel arms of the fastener, substantially as herein described.
I. NEWTON HOPKINS.
