GROUND ANCHOR.
Application filed March 21, 1925. Serial No. 17,247.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SOLOMON Joi-INsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing near Chatsworth, in the county of Sioux and cit-ate of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Ground Anchor, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to ground anchors and particularly that class of anchors which are buried in the earth and serve as a suitable connection for guy ropes, stays, braces, and like devices for firmly holding in position, standards, fenders, and
' similar structures and has for its principal object to provide an anchor of this type which may be readily inserted in place in the ground, and which will immediately and automatically engage itself in the opening when tension or strain is applied to the stays, guys, braces or the like.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a ground anchor of this nature having a stop plate thereon which will allow the anchor to engage a limited distance in the side of the hole in which it has been placed when strain is applied thereto tending to lift the anchor from the ground.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an anchor of this nature which is possessed of an exceedingly simple structure, one which is both efficient and reliable in use, inexpensive to manufacture, easy to manipulate, strong, durable and otherwise well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
The improved ground anchor aims to furthcr provide a device wherein the same is disposed in an opening having a width less than the length of the anchor so that when a guy, stay, or the like is applied adjacent the lower end thereof, and pulled upwardly out of the ground, the strain will cause the upper end of the anchor to dig into the side of the opening and means for limiting the distance to which said end may dig into the side of the opening.
lVith the above and numerous other objects in View as will appear as the descrip tion proceeds, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

Referring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that the anchor includes an elongated flat'plate 5 having one end thereof bent at an oblique angle thereto so as to form the extension 6 while the other end is provided with an opening 7. A stop plate 8 is provided with an angularly disposed flange 9 fixed to the plate 5 at the juncture of this plate 5 with its extension 6. The .stop plate 8 extends angularly from the plate 5 and diverges from the extension 6.
The anchor is adapted to be placed in a hole in the ground as the auger hole 10 illustrated in Figure 1, with the extension 6 disposed uppermost. A guy cable 11 may then be attached to the plate 5 by a suitable element 12 engaged in the opening 7. lVhen the guy cable 11 is tightened up, the extension 6 will be forced into the ground at the side of the opening until the stop plate 8 rests on the inner surface of the opening.
The anchor may not be further moved when in this position. The opening in the ground may then be filled up if desired.
It is evident that this anchor may be used in numerous other different ways and will operate with the same principle as is involved in the above illustration It is also apparent that numerous changes in the details of construction, in the materials, in the sizes, and in the combination. and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is A ground anchor of the class described of substantial Y-shaped formation including an elongated flat plate having one end bent to form an angularly disposed extension, and astop plate attached to the first plate at its juncture with its extension and disposed angularly thereto.
