-UNITED' STATES PATENT FFICE. l
CAMILLO .T. GORLA, or EAST sr. LOUIs, ILLINOIS.
FENCE-POST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 287,923, dated November 6, 1883.
' Application filed June 19,1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GAMILLO J. (loans, of East St. Louis, St. Clair county, State of Illinois, have made a new and useful Improvement in Fence-Posts, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation, the-part for holding the top boards being broken away; Fig. 2, a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4, a
.section on the line 44 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5, an elevation at right angles to that of Fig. 1, showing the upperend of the post; and Fig. 6, a view in perspective, showing detached the parts of the device used to brace the post.
The same letters of reference denote the same parts.
The present invention relates partly to the means for holding the top board of the fence, and partly to the mode of constructing the de- .vice for bracing and anchoring the post. I
The body A of the post is preferably tubu-. lar, is suitably pointed at its foot, and at the top may be shaped as desired. The post'is designed mainly for supporting wires; but as it has been found desirable to use atop board in connection with the wires, a part, B, is attached to the post for the purpose of connect ing the top boards therewith. This part B consists of a plate shaped to receive the ends a c of the top boards, 0G, and, between the ends a a, being, by means of the bolt 12, fastened to the post A. To this end the plate B, when it rests on the top of the post,'is closed at the top I but when the plate is attached I to the post at a point below the extreme top of the post, as shown, the plate-top b is perforated to enable the plate to be passed down upon the post. Saving such perforation, the plate should be closed to protect the board ends from the weather. The boards are fastened to the plate-by the fastenings b b, which pass through the flanges b b and the boards, as shown in Fig. l.
D D D D represent the device for bracing the post in the ground. This device consists of the two similar plates, D D, and the rings D D. The plates D D are semicircular at the I center (1, and at each side of the center are extended to form the wings d d, and at d? d are slotted. The plates are so placed as to encircle the post, and are united and secured to the post by means of the rings D D, which are placed around the post and inserted in the slots (1 d, as shown in Figs. 1, 4.
The wires E E are fastened to the post by means of the hooks F F. The hooks are left open, as shown in Fig. 3, until the fence-wires are inserted therein, and then the points f f of the hooks are closed against the post. The hooks pass through the post, and their ends f f are-clinched, as shown in Figs. 2, 3.
I claim I 1. The combination of the post A,the plates D D, and the rings D D, said plates being united and secured to the post, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the post A, the plates D D, the rings D D, the plate B, as described, and the boards 0 C, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
XVitness my hand this 14th day of June,1883.
GAMILLO J. GORLA.
