AYTOH/VEVS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIOE.
PORTER KINNE BUSHNELL, OF MEDINA, NEW YORK.
FEN CE-POST.
Application filed September 8, 1911.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PORTER K. BUSHNELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Medina, in the county of' Orleans and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Fence-Post, of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description.
Among the principal objects which the present invention has in view are: to provide a post of the character mentioned which may be compactly stored and readily transported; and to produce a post of the character mentioned which is durable and economical.
One embodiment of the present invention is disclosed in the structure illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which like charact-ers of reference denote corresponding parts in all the Views, and in which* Figure 1 is a perspective view of a post of the character mentioned constructed and arranged in accordance with the present invention, the post being shown in conjunction with fastening wires used therewith; Fig. 2 is a vertical cross section of the post and wire fastenings therefor; Fig. 3 is a cross section, on an enlarged scale, taken on the line 3-3 in Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a cross section, on an enlarged scale, taken on the line 4-4 in F ig. 2.
As shown in the accompanying drawings, the post is constructed from angle iron of any suitable grade. The fianges of the iron are formed to a suitable width. The ridge 9 of the angle iron is provided at suitable intervals with a perforation to freely pass the bolts 10. The bolts 10 are provided with hook ends 11 and a t-hreaded section 12 to receive nuts 13. The hook ends 11 are provided to engage the fence wires 14: as and when tension is applied to the bolts 10, to draw the said wires within the Opening of the perforation mentioned.
The post in its complete shape is provided with an open top 15.
The flanges 16 and 17 of the post are separated at the bottom, and the separated ends are spread to form the feet 18 and 19, as shown best in Figs. 1 and 4 of the drawings. c The post is properly covered with a protcting substance, such as asphaltum paint,
rior to installing it in position. When installed the feet 18 and 19 rest in the bottom Specification of Letters Patent.

of the post hole to form a base therefor. When the post is properly disposed in the hole and the said hole has been properly tamped, the wires 14 are run to complete the fence. To receive the wires the bolts 10 are extended from the perforations formed for them in the post, the nuts 13 being loosened for this purpose. When the nuts 13 are tightened against the brace blocks 20 the wires 14 are drawn into the Opening of the perforations for the bolts, being crimped in this action to provide a non-slipping attachment for the wires upon each of the posts. As seen, the blocks 20 are provided with a horizontal top and bottom eXtension. See Fig. 2 of the drawings. The top and bottom extensions are V-shaped to conform to the channel of the post to form reinforcing members for the post when iron of a light g'rade is employed. This construction, it will be understood, permits the employment of the lighter weight grades of angle iron.
In the preferred construction each of the When so constructed it will be understood that in the event of a breakage of a single wire between any two of the posts this may be repaired by anchoring a short strand of wire upon the bolts 10, wrapping the same behind the heads 21 thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a fence post constructed from metal shaped to form an angular channel, and perforated at the junction of the sides thereof; a bolt adapted to engage a running wire and having a screw-threaded shank; a plurality of supporting blocks for said bolt, having a rectangular base portion and triangular eX- tensions disposed perpendicular to said base portion to fit within the channel of said post; and a nut to register with the screwthreaded shank to draw the bolt within said perforations.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
PORTER KINNE BUSHNELL.
