Description

B. WALLENKAMPr FENCE POST.. APPLICATION FILED MAY 2111915.
Patented Apr. ,2, -1918.
Ella--1:
BERNARD WALLENKAMP, 0F HIGHLAND, WISCONSIN.
FENCE-POST.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 21, 1915. Serial No. 29,644.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BERNARD WALLEN- KAMP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Highland, in the county of Iowa, State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence- Posts, and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. V
The present invention is directed to improvements in fence posts and has for its object to provide a device of this character so constructed that the same can be easily and quickly driven into the ground.
A further object of the invention is to provide a fence post which can be driven into the ground, and to provide the same with means to prevent withdrawal of the post.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a post with means to limit the driving movement of the same, said means serving also to hold the post against lateral strain.
With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the post.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. r
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the anchor arms.
Referring to the drawing 1 designates the post, which is formed from angle iron, and has its web 2 provided adjacent its free edge with a plurality of vertically alined perforations 3, which serve to attach the line wiresto the post.
A pair of anchor arms 4 and consist of ears 5, which are disposed vertically and have formed integral therewith horizontal flanges 6, the inner ends of are provided which are formed with shoulders 7, the purpose of which will appear later.
The inner ends of the ears 5 are pivotally connected to the web 8 of the post, the pivotal connection of each arm being vertically spaced so that said arms, when in their operative position will extend in diflerent planes.
Fixed to the web 2, so as to extend at right angles to the arms 4 is a plate 9, the ends of which terminate in downwardly directed spurs 10, which are adapted to engage in the ground when the fence post is in use.
When the fence post is driven into the ground, which is readily accomplished since the webs 2 and 8 are beveled as at 11, the arms 4 will, during the driving operation fold against the sides of the post. Should the post tend to move upwardly from any cause whatsoever, the arms 5 will swing outwardly until the shoulders 7 thereof contact with the adjacent webs, thus preventing any further upward movement of the post. By providing the arms 4 with the flanges 6, and since the same are disposed horizontally the resistance offered by said flanges will be such as to prevent upward movement of the post.
What is claimed is The combination with a fence post formed of angle iron; of anchoring devices pivoted to one of the webs of said post and extending in opposite directions, each of said devices including an elongated ear arranged in a vertical plane and having its bottom edge provided with a horizontal flange extending for a major portion of the length thereof and adapted to resist upward movement of the post when said device is in operative position, the flan e of one ear engaging the outer edge of the web to which it is pivoted while the flange of the other car engages the outer surface of the other web to limit the movement of the devices to inoperative position, the inner ends of said flanges forming shoulders and the shoulder of the first named flange engaging said outer edge of the first named web, and the shoulder of the second named flange engaging the outer surface of said other web, when the devices are in operative positions to limit the movement of the same to such positions;
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
BERNARD VVALLENKAMP.
Witnesses:
W. S. EGAN, HARRY J. WALLENKAMP.
