This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a post base. Its primary object being to provide a reinforced concrete base for a wooden post.
A further object of the invention is to provide a base of non-decaying material having projection means formed thereon and arranged to engage receptacle means in a wooden post by means of which the same is fastened to said base.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a post base of material not subject to decay when placed in the ground and means to secure a post thereon in such a manner that it may be renewed without disturbing the base when the elements of nature shall have made it necessary to install a new one.
With these and other objects in View that may appear while the description proceeds the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically set forth, claimed and shown in the accompanying drawing forming part of this application and in which Fig. 1 is an elevation of an improved post base of circular cross section having part of a post mounted thereon.

Fig. 3 is an elevation of the post base constructed for driving into a post hole.
Fig. 4 is a cross section on the line 44 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a cross section on the line 55 of Fig. 2.
Referring more in detail to the drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views it will be seen the invention comprises a base Ill which may be of circular cross-section as shown in Figs. 1 and 3 or of rectangular cross section as in Fig. 2, or of any other desired shape for any particular purpose. The base will be constructed of prescribed proportions, depending upon the use of which it is to be employed. The upper projecting portion l l of the base is made of reduced diameter and is designed to receive a wooden post l2 thereon. Said wooden post having first been bored longitudinally to fit the said projection II. A number of pegs or bolts [3 are fitted transversely through the post [2 and the projection H, to secure the former to the latter, holes having first been drilled through both members to receive the said pegs or bolts, adjacent pegs being at right angles to each other to prevent splitting the post.
Reinforcing means M are provided in the post base, this may take the form of a pipe or a channel iron, angle iron or T section and extends from a predetermined distance from the top and bottom of the base.
In Fig. 3 the base is designed for driving, to be used on the end of a pile for construction purposes such as wharves, bridges, breakwaters and the like when the pile is to be driven to a firm footing, the cement and iron combined base to be a little longer than the distance from firm footing to the water line at high tide and is constructed with a conical or pointed end I5. The reinforcing member l4 therein is likewise pointed as at [6 and extends well into the point of the base to strengthen the same.
The base shown in Fig. 2 is of rectangular sec tion having a circular projection I l and is designed more particularly for use on a gate post and the like. The post is secured thereon in the usual manner and is designed to conform to the shape and size of the said base. While a T shaped iron reinforcing member is shown in this base it is understood any other convenient shape of reinforcing member may be used.
From the foregoing it will be seen I have provided a base for a post that may be varied in design to suit various purposes. The base when once set in the ground may be let in position permanently and a new post installed thereon should the same become damaged or decayed.
It is believed that the construction and advantages of the structure shown may be apparent from the foregoing paragraghs taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing without further detailed description.
While the preferred embodiment of the invention has been disclosed it is understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of co-operating parts may be resorted to within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the inven tion.
I claim:
A post comprising a concrete base portion having its upper end reduced to form a tenon, a metal reinforcing bar embedded in said base portion and extending into the tenon, an upper section disposed on the upper end of the base portion having a central bore to form a mortise to receive the tenon and fastening elements passing through the upper section, tenon and reinforcing bar.
