BOOK
Apphc ation filed December 31, 1925.- Serial No. 78,549.
use in notebooks, such as are used by stenographers. I
One of the objects of my invention is to provide, in, a book of the kind described, a novel memoranda leaf having a portion arranged to be swung to a position projecting outside the edges ofthe book, in a position for inscribiug nicn'ioranda thereon without any considerable movement of the writing hand from the normal writing position, and. arranged to be swung, when not in use, to
a position wholly within the edges of the leaves of the book.
A further objector my invention is to provide, in a book of the kind described, two niemoranda leaves of the kind referred to disposed adjacent to the covers respectively of the book, and arranged so that when the bookis positioned for writing on one side of the leaves, one of the niemoranda leaves will. be in convenient position for writing thereon, and when the book is reversed for writing on the other side of the leaves, the other memoranda leaf will be in like position for writing thereon.
My invention provides further a device of the kind described which is simple, cheaply made, easily operated, and eflicient in operation.
The novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates the preferred embodiment of my invention, as applied'to two. types of books,
Fig. 1, is'a perspective View of a type of book, commonly used by stenographers, and having the covers swinging from the upper, end of the book, provided with my improvement.
Fig. 2 is another perspective of the book shown in Fig. 1, the covers beingnearly closed.
Fig. 3 is an elevation of the book shown in Figs. 1 and 2, showing one of the covers turned back.
Fig. dis a perspective of a book, of the type having the leaves swinging from the side edges, provided with my improvement, a portion of one cover being broken away.
Similar reference characters designate similar parts in the diflerent views.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 3, 1 designates the two covers of the book, 2 theusual leaves thereof, and 3 and two memoranda leaves en'ibodying my improvement and disposed respectively ad acent to the covers 1.
Each of the leaves 3 and 4 is provided with a hinged memoranda portion adapted to be swung to a-position pro ecting outside the 'edgesof the other leaves, and comprising,
preferably, a tongue 5 cutfrom the body of the leat, and hinged thereto on a longitudinal ax s so as to' be swung to a projecting position, as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, and,
when not in use being adapted. to be swung to a position wholly inside the edges of the leaves, as shown by the leaf 3, Fig. 1.
Inthe typeof book shown in Figs. 1 to 3, the axes of the tongues 5 are respectively adjacent to opposite longitudinal edges of the leaves. This construction enables one tongue 5 to be disposed at the right side of the book, when extended, when one side of the leaves 2 is being written on, and when the other side of the leaves 2 is being written on, the book being reversed in the usual manner, the other tongue 5 will be disposed at the right, when extended.
In thetype of book shown in Fig. 4, the memoranda leaves 6 and 7, corresponding to the leaves 3 and 4, have the tongues 5 both hinged to the leaves adjacent to the outer longitudinal edges thereof, so that in the use of the book each tongue will project to the right, when the book is reversed for writing on both sides of the leaves.
In the operation of my invention with both types of books shown, the tongues 5 finished, the tongues 5 can be folded into the book for future reference. By having the hinged portions of the tongues 5 adjacent to the edges of the leaves, relatively weak connections exist between the tongues and leaves, which, however, are strong enough for the temporarypin-pose of the book, but which enable the lnelnoramluin tongues to be readily detached for filing away, after the book has been filled and is no longer used.
I do not limit my invention to the structures shown and described, as many modifications, withinthe scope of the appended elaims, may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim is 2- 1. A book of the kind described having one of its leaves provided with a memoranda tongue having connection with the leaf at the inner side of and. spaced from one edge of the leaf and out from the body of the leaf andhaving one end edge and its edges free, and adapted to he swung to from a position project ng outside edges of the other leaves,
2. A book of the kind described. having two of its leaves, which ere respeetively adjaeent to the COVQIS of the oohfeaeh provided with a meniei'ain is out from all the body of the leaf and ted to l swung to and from a positio projectii outside the edges the nth-e1 leaves, the axes of the tongues hein' re Lively the inner side of and spaced edges of the leaves" In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
