This-inventioir rel-ales to ironing boards and 1s more partittnlin'ly d rected to an attachment for supporting large pieces of goods above the floor.

A further object o" the invention is the provision of a device adapted to be extended laterally frmn the longitudinal edges of an ironing board for clamping the projecting ends of the pieces of laundry adjacent the sides of the ironing board to prevent them from falling upon the floor.
This invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description, in view of the accompanying drawing forming a part of the specification; nevertheless it is to be understood that the invention is not confined to the disclosure, being susceptible of such changes and modifications which shall define no material departure from the salient features of the invention as expressed in the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of an ironing board showing the supporting members laterally projected from the longitudinal edges of an ironing board.
Figure 2 is a bottom plan view of the supporting members in an inoperative position and located Within the confines of an ironing board.
Figure is a side view of an ironing board.
Figure 1 is a fragmentary view in perspective of the operating means for the cloth holding devices.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 designates an ironing board having a cover 2 secured at its longitudinal edges the under face tru board. 1 by means eel rs. clips or threads 4- or in any other proved 1nanne'r..; A
At each end of the board is a semicircular plate or spider 5 ha pro c tinglugs (3 and 1'! which are provided with per-fora.-
tions and are secured in any approved' n-ane nor to said board These lugs. are formed integrally with plat-e 5 and support the plate or web ina spaced relation from, the under 5 le of the ironing board. A pain of segmental" gears 7 I and- 8 are rotatably mounted upon each plate, as shown at 9.
Extending from each gear 7 is ant-rm. 10 while an-arni 11. extends froineach-gear 8. he outerfree ends of-the armsll; are piv otally connectedwith a rod 12 and a rod 13 hasitsopposite ends pivotally connected withthe arms 10. The rods 12 and 13 nray be madeof any metal or-vrood or prefer-ably may be made of a nickel-plated iron rod or a plated. steel or brass tubing. Adjacent the ends of either rod 12 or 13 is secured in spaced relation a pair of clips 1 having their inner free ends 15 in engagement with the rods and extending towards each other.
A semicircular member 16 is formed integrally with the plate a and as shown more particularly in Figure 2 the curved bar 16 is raised sufliciently above the surface of the plate 5 to maintain the arms 10 and 11 in fiat engagement with said plate.
The arcuately shaped bar 16 which is of integral formation with plate 5 has notches 18 adapted to be engaged by the arms 10 and 11 for locking said arms against movement when the rods 12 and 13 are in an inoperative position. Notches 19 are provided in the bars to engage the arms 10 and 11 for locking said arms in an operative position for maintaining the rods extending laterally from the longitudinal edges of the ironing board for supporting large pieces of laundry materials.
The device shown in Figure 2 is raised snfiiciently above the under surface of the board. 1 in order to permit the ready securing of the pad 2 to said board. When the board is in position and the rods 12 and 13 are disposed within the confines of the board one of the re is, such as 12, may be grasped and pulled laterally outward, from the longitudinal edge of the board, whereby the arms 11 are oscillated on their pivots 9 whence the gears 8 will revolve the gears 7 and cause the arms .10 to be moved outwardly and in longitudinal alinement with the arms 11 and transversely of the ends of the board. As the arms 10 are moved outwardly the rods 13 will be forced laterall from the side edges of the board. As tie table cloth or large piece of laundry is placed upon the ironing board the ends of the table cloth which is not being ironed are secured to the rod 13 by the pair of clamps 1 k and. as the opposite ends of the cloth is ironed the same is placed between the clamps 14: on the rod 12 and said cloth is carried by said red as the cloth is being ironed.
IVhen the ironing operation is over and it is desired to place the rods 12 and 13 in the position shown in Figure 2 it will be only necessary to move one of the rods inwardly and rotate the gears 7 and 8 whence the other gears will be rotated and the arms will move towards each other and completely po sition the rods inwardly of the edges of the ironing board.
Vhat I claim is:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with an ironing board, plates secured at opposite ends to the ironing board, a pair of segmental gears'in mesh with each other and mounted for rotation on each plate, arms extending from said gears,
and a rod pivotally connected with a pair of the arms at each side of the ironing board.
2. In a deviceof the character described, the combination with an ironing board, plates secured at opposite ends to the ironingboard, a pair of segmental gears in mesh with each other and mounted for rotation on each plate, arms extending from said gears, a rod pivotally connected with a pair of the arms at each side of the ironing board, and means for maintaining the arms in position adjacent the surface of the board.
In a device of the character described, the combination of an ironing board, a pair of segmental gears in mesh with each other and mounted for rotation at each end of the board, an arm extending from each gear, and a rod pivotally connected with a pair of the arms at each side of the ironing board.
4. In a device of the character described, the combination of an ironing board, a pair of segmental gears in mesh with each other and mounted for rotation at each end of the board, an arm extending from each gear, a rod pivotally connected with a pair 01. the arms at each side of the ironing board, and a bar spaced from the board for maintaining the arms in the same plane during operation.
