IRONING BOARD ATTACHMENT Filed Jan. 25, 1928 Inventor (/2. Eggs/war Alto r22 qy Patented Aug. 13, 1929.
UNITED STATES PATENT IRONING BOARD ATTACHMENT.
Application filed January 25, 1928.
The present invention relates to an ironing board attachment and has reference more particularly to a device for preventing the article that is being ironed on the board from coming in contact with the floor.
One of the present objects of the present invention is to provide an ironing board at tachment of the above mentioned character that can be readily and easily set up in position for use, the parts comprising the attachment being readily dis: ssembled and positioned beneath the ironing board so as to be entirely out of the way when the iron ing board is not in use.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an ironing board attachment of the above mentioned character which is simple in construction, inexpensive, strong and durable and further well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
ther objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent during the course of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the accompanying drawing wherein like reference characters indicate correspond ing parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of an ironing board showing my attachmentassociated therewith, the parts being arranged in an operative position.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary bottom plan View of one of the apron supporting arms showing the manner in which the stop lug which is associated with bracket secured to the under side of the ironing board engages with said arm.
Figure 3 is a side elevation of one of the arms showing the manner in which the same supports one end of the longitudinally extending apron.
Figure 4: is a top plan view of one of the arms and its supporting bracket, and
Figure 5 is a sectional view showing the construction of the attaching bracket and the cross sectional shape of the adjacent arm.
In the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1 designates an ironing board. of any conven- Serial No. 249,351.
tional construction, the supporting stand therefor being fragmentarily illustrated with reference more particularly to Figure l of the drawing. A substantially rectangular shaped bracket 3 in the form of a plate provided with flanges at its respective edges secured to the under side of the board by means of the screws 6 that extend through the openings 7 provided therefor in the plate 4: of the bracket 3, the flanges 5 that extend around the edges of the plate 4: also engaging the under side of the board 1 in the manner as also clearly shown in Figure 5.
Four of such brackets are preferably employed, the same being arranged in pairs and two of these brackets are arranged adjacent each of the side edges of the ironing board inwardly of the respective ends thereof. The central portion of the plate 4L of each bracket is formed with the outwardly pressed boss 8. The attachment further comprehends the provision of an elongated arm 9 that is formed with the upwardly disposed hook 10 at each end thereof. The side edges of this arm 9 are flanged as shown at 11 with reference more particularly to Figure 5. As there are four brackets, there necessarily are four arms 9 and the arm 9 is pivotally secured at a point intermediate its ends to the outwardly disposed boss 8 of each of the brackets 3, the pivot pin being illustrated at 12.
A stop forming lug 13 is struck out from one of the side flanges 5 of each bracket adjacent one end thereof, a similar stop forming lug 14L being struck out from the other side flange of said bracket at a point adjacent the opposite end of the plate and these stop forming lugs cooperate to limit the swinging movement of the arm 9 in one direction as shown very clearly in Figure 2.
The attachment further includes the provision of the elongated apron 15 that is formed of canvas or any other fabric material, the same being of rectangular forma- 9 tion and formed at each corner with an eyelet 16 and when one pair of the arms 9 on one side of the ironing board 1 is swung to the position shown in the full lines in Figure 2, so that the arms will be disposed trans- 2, I Q a versely with respect to the ironing board and the outer end portions thereof extend beyond the side edge of the board, the lugs 13 and 14: engaging the opposite flanged edges of the respective arms to maintain the same in proper position against swinging movement in one direction.
The apron is then attached to the pair of arms by having the eyelets 16 disposed over the respective hooks 10 in the manner as shown very clearly in Figure 3 so that a U-shaped apron or bag is provided, a portion thereof extending beyond the edge of the ironing board to receive the overhanging end of the article that is being ironed on the board and thus preventing any possibility of the article coming in contact with the floor.
By arranging the ironing board with four of such brackets and complementary pivoted arms, the apron can be attached at either longitudinal side edge portion of the ironing board. When not in use, the apron is detached from the hooks 10 and the arms 9 are then swung to the position shown in the dotted lines in Figure 2, thus being entirely confined beneath the ironing board and inwardly of the side edge thereof.
The present attachment will not interfere with the use of an ironing board in any manner. but will at all times be positive and efiicient in carrying out the purposes for which it is designed. Furthermore, the simplicity of my improved device renders the $511116 inexpensive in its manufacture, yet strong and durable.
While I have shown the preferred embodiment of my invention it is to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is The combination with an ironing board, of a. pair of brz ekets secured to the. under side thereof adjacent one of its longitudinal edges, an elongated arm pivotally secured intermediate its ends on the bottom of each bracket, each of the arms being disposed. longitudinally beneath the ironing board when in one position, the outer ends of the arms extending outwardly f the side edges of the ironing board when the arms are disposed transversely with respect to the bracket, hooks formed on the respective ends of each arm, an apron extending longitudinally of the ironing board and secured at its respective corners to the hooks on the respective ends of the arms, whereby the apron is suspended beneath the ironing board with the outer portion thereof projecting beyond the adjacent edge of the ironing board, a lug extending downwardly from one side edge portion of each bracket adjacent one end thereof, an additional lug extending downwardly from the opposite side edge of each bracket adjacent the opposite end thereof, said lugs being adapted for engagement with the opposite sides of the respective arms for limiting the swinging movement thereof in one direction.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature.
