provements in Pipe renches, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a pipe wrench which is adapted for e'co nomical manufacture and quantity production and which is of simple and durable construction, reliable and effective in operation, easily handled and adjusted, and
adapted to forcibly and effectively engage work of various sizes and contour.
Other objects and advantages of the invention reside in certain novel features of the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective View, showing the preferred embodiment of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a view thereof in central longitudinal vertical section, with parts shown in elevation for the sake of illustration; and
Fig. 3 is a view in transverse section, on line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that the invention contemplates a substantially open frame 5 which also serves as a handle for the wrench. The frame 5 is made up of a bar of metal, preferably drilled-steel or the like, bent to U-shaped form so as to present a roun-declbody portion 6 and spaced parallel legs 7. The bar of metal making up the frame 5 is preferably of circular cross section and the peripheries of the legs 7 of the frame constituted by this bar have a smooth finish for a purpose which will hereinafter appear.
The wrench includes a fixed inner jaw 8 which is provided with an opening 9 in which the ends of the legs 7 are fitted and secured by means of pins lO'fitted in complementary recesses 7 and 8 provided in the legs 7 and jaw 8, respectively.
A carrier 11 is provided with smooth openings 12 in which the legs 7 are slidably fitted. The carrier extends at one end for a considerable distance beyond the frame 5 and in this extended end which designated at 13 an opening 141 is formed. An adjustable outer jaw, designated"generally at 15, is provided and'includes a shank 16 having its lower end operating in the opening 14 of the extension 13 of the carrier and pivotally connected to the carrier by means of a pivot pin 17. The shank 16 also operates in an elongated opening 18 provided in an extension 19 of the jaw 8; I
Spring means is provided for biasing the position of the jaw15 and is shown for the sake of illustration as comprising a coil spring 20 mounted in a recess 21 in the extension 13 of the carrier and engaging the shank 16 of the movable jaw 15. Obviously a blade spring or any other type of spring may be provided for the coil spring 20. Operating means is provided for movin the jaw 15 toward and away from the fixe jaw 10, and this operating means preferably includes an operating screw 22 extending centrally of the frame 5 in between and parallel to the legs 7 and rotatably mounted at its ends in the body portion 6 of theframe 5 and in the fixed inner jaw 8. The screw 22 is formed by taking a bar of metal of rounded formation and flattening a section of'the bar and then twisting this flattened section to provide a nut engaging section 23 having a spiral rib or thread. The remaining section of the bar is then machined to provide a carrier engaging section 24 having a spiral thread but the thread of the carrier engaging section is of a different pitch from the thread of the nut-engaging section. The thread of the carrier engaging section is operatively engaged with a threaded bearing 25 provided in the carrier 11. A traveling nut 26 is provided and has a pair of openings 27 formed therein, the legs 7 of the frame 5 being slidably fitted in these openings 27 whereby the nut is mounted for sliding movement on the frame 5. The nut 26 is also provided with a central opening 28 accommodating the nut engaging section 23 of the screw 22. Pins 29 are carried by the nut 26 and provide a means for imparting rotation to the screw 22 when the nut is moved along the legs 7. Of course it is to be understood that the pins 29 operate in the spiral groove defined by the spiral thread or rib of the nut engaging section 23.
With this arrangement when the traveling nut is moved along the legs 7 the screw 22 will b t r and h arri r m d to ward or away from the fixed jaw 8 so as to move the adjustable outer jaw 15 toward or away from the fixed jaw 8. The parts of the wrench may be readily cleaned or oiled and all of theseadvantages are had in an organization well adapted for use as a pipe wrench and susceptible of economical manufacture and quantity production.
We claim:
In a wrench, a frame and handle comprising a bar of metal bent to U-shaped form providing spaced legs, a fixed jaw secured to the ends of the legs, a carrier provided with spaced openings which slidably reoeive said legs, an extension integral with said carrier, said extension having an opening, an adjustable outer jaw confronting said fixed jaw, a shank formed integral with said outer jaw and pivotally secured to said extension, said fixed jaw having an elongated opening through which said shank is slidably and swingably fitted, an operating screw rotatably mounted on the frame and on the fixed jaw, said operating screw coacting with the carrier, and a traveling nut slidably mounted on the legs of the frame and co-aoting with the operating screw.
