WILLIAM HENRY BARACLOUGrI-I, OF BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND.
ADJUSTABLE SPANNER OR WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 16, 1920.
Application filed October 3l, 1919. Serial No. 334,818.
To all whom t may concer/n.' y
Be it known that` I, IVILLIAM HENRY BA- nAcLoUsI-r, subject of King George V, Great Britain, residing at No. 295 Slade road, Erdington, Birmingham, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Adjustable Spanners or Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to 'improvements in adjustable spanners or wrenches, and refers to those spanners or wrenches in which the one jaw is adapted to slide along the lever or shank of the fixed jaw the adjustment being effected by means of a screw pinion and rackzand the object of my improvements are to adord facilities for the movement of the sliding jaw easily and quickly to iit a nut or other object to be gripped by taking the pinion out of gear with the rack on the shank of the fixed jaw, which enables the movable jaw to slide kfreely to and fro on the said shank, and close on to a nut or other object, after which a closer adjustment of the jaws may be effected.
I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l, is a side elevation of a spanner or wrench made in accordance with my invention:
Fig. 2, is a plan of the top side, and- Fig. 3, a plan of the under side,
Fig. 4, is a transverse section of Fig. l,
Fig. 5, is a vertical section taken on the line aof Fig. 4l.
Fig. 6, a like section taken on the line c-(Z of Fig. 4. Fig. 7 is a transverse section showing the Spanner in position for sliding the movable jaw along the shank of the fixed jaw. Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The lever or hand-grip A, is made from a sheet steel blank having the oblique horn piece B-B, the neck part C, the two cutaway parts, ll-D.
This said blank is operated on by suitable tools to embrace the reinforcement piece or bracket F, and so shape or fashion it into the formation represented.
The reinforcement piece or bracket F consists of the two members G, G, and the oblique horn piece H, and the lugs I, adapted to pass through slots previously cut in the aforesaid blank.
In operating on the aforesaid blank it is bent into the forn'iation shown in. the drawing to form the lever or hand-grip A. The neck part C, isbent over the reinforcement piece F, the lugs I pass through the slots, the two oblique horn pieces B, B, are closed down on to the horn piece I-I. The parts are secured together by closing over the 'end of the lugs I.
The two members G-G, constitute bearings for the axle J, of the screw pinion K, which is of the ordinary form, and is free to rotate and mesh with the tooth rack R, of the shank l?. The pinion is arranged to protrude slightly through the holes D,-D.
The saddle piece L, and the jaw M, are made up in one part; the cavity N, is shaped for the reception of the circular part of the oblique horn part of the hand-grip; the tang part O, is adapted to take bearing on the under side of the shank P; this said shank is of the ordinary kind furnished with the rack R.
The hand-grip A, being fulcrumed to the l saddle piece at S, with the oblique horn against the back of the loose jaw M, will have a downward movement as shown at Fig. 7, and free to slide the saddle and loose jaw to and fro` on the shank P, when a nut or other object may be gripped.
The hand-grip is then raised as shown at Figs. 1,- /l,- 5,- and G, the screw pinion K, meshing with the teeth of the rack R, when a closer adjustment of the jaws 'may be effected by means of the pinion K, which protrudes slightly through the holes in the hand-grip.
I am aware that prior' to my invention adjustable spanners or wrenches have been made in which the movable jaw has been operated by a screw pinion forming part of a longitudinal bar pivoted to the movable jaw, the pinion gearing with teeth formed on the back of the shank; and several forms in which the teeth are formed on the movable jaw and adapted to gear with those on the shank by means of a pivoted leve-r, and spring catch arrangement. I therefore do not claim such a combination broadly; but I claim;
1. In a wrench, the combination with a iiXed aw and shank carried thereby and a rack formed on said shank, of a movable jaw slidable on said shank in relation to the fixed jaw, a hollow hand grip pivoted to said movable jaw, a bracket mounted in and substantially inclosed by said hand grip,
and a pinion rotatably supported by said bracket and designed to mesh With said rack.
2. In a Wrench, the Combination With aiixed jaw and shank carried thereby and a rack formed on said shank, of a. movable jaw slidable on said shank in relation to the fixed jan", a hand grip comprising a body portion an intermediate neel; portion and an oblique horn portion, a bracket embraced by the body portion oi the grip and having an oblique horn portion alined with the oblique horn portion of the grip, a pin for pivotally supporting both said horn portions on the movable javv, and a pinion rotatably supported by said bracket and designed to mesh with said rack. Y Y
3. In a Wrench, the combination With a iXed jaw member having a rack formed on the shank thereof, of a movable jaw rne1nber slidable on the shank in relation to the fixed vj aw, a hollow hand grip having ahead Ypivoted in a cavity in said movable jaW said grip having apertures in its Sides, a bracket Within and substantially inolosed by Said grip, and a pinion ,rotatably supported by said bracket and protruding through said apertures, said pinion being designed to mesh With said rack.
In testimony whereof I have affixed iny 30
