` BAUL, MINNESOTA.
WRENCH.
Application filed December 10.1929. Serial No. 428,685.
To all 'wlw/nt t may concern.' f
Be it known that L MARTIN PARKER7 a subject of the Dominion of Canada, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of ldinnesotafhave invented certain new and useful improvements in VVrenches; and l do hereby declareftheffollowingftobe a full, clear. and exact ndescription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. i f i This invention relates to a'wrench and particularly to an adjustable wrenchadapted to be used in place of a'plurality of socket wrenches. f f
It is an object ofthis invention to provide a wrench of extremely simple structure` and ,which can be readily adjusted to fit various sized nuts.
It is a further objectof this invention to provider a wrench of. great strength which can be conveniently usedinstead of the ordinary socket wrench and which` engages the nut from the top. j l
These and other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent fromthe followingY description made in connection with the accompanying drawings in, which ylike reference characters refer to the same parts throughout the differentvviews and in which:
Fig. 1 isa longitudinal central section of the device some of the parts of which are shown in elevation: y
Fig. 2 is a partial plan viewl of the device;
Fig. 3 is a partialview similar toFig. 1
showing the wrench expanded and engaging sr a nut.
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view on line 1 4- of Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line 5 5 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 6 is a partial view showing a modified construction of the jaws on the wrench.
`Referring to the drawings:
The device is seen to comprise a hollow tubular and tapered body portion having a tapered opening extending longitudinally therethrough and formed at one end into a. square cross-section as shown in Fig. 5, to provide a handle-receiving portion. A handie comprising two oppositely extending portions 2 and a central hub portion 3 is shown as having the hub portion formed with a square aperture to iit over the 'square end portion of the body member. This handle portion is therefore readily detachable when it is desired to carry the wrench in a tool kit orpackage. One side of the body portion is extended to form a stationary jaw memj ber l and ahook portion 5 is formed on the opposite side ofthe body portion over which is placed the movable jaw member 6., the same being provided near one end with a suitable aperture lfor engagement over the the other end thereof, this rod being threaded n adjacent its projecting end to receive an ad# just-ing nut 10. A suitable washer isprovided between ythe nut 10 and the end of the body 1. The jaws are shownas provided engaging a nut.
The wrench is designed primarily to be usedin place of an ordinary socket wrench and to engage the nut from the end thereof although where it is convenient the nut may also be readily engaged from the side.r z To adjust the aw members thenut 10 is turned andthe screw rod 8 moved longitudinallj7 of the device.k The link members 7 are then either opened or closed to move rthe jaws apart or. towards each other; `Since. the lower jaw as'shownk in Fig. 1 is stationary, the head end of rod 8 will swing on the lower Alinks 7 about the fulcrum of the pivot at the end of said links andthe end of rod 8 will therefore be raised when the jaws are in open position and -will approximately contact with the yupper portion of the jaw member l as shown in Fig. 3. The upper jaws 6 will obviously swing about the hook member 5 as a fulcrum when the distance between the jaws is adjusted.
In Fig. 6 a modification is shown in which both the jaws 4 and 6 are similar and are pivoted at their inner ends to lugs formed on the end of the body member 1. In this construction both jaws will swing when the circular rod 8 is moved longitudinally and it is unnecessary to have a large opening in the body member to accommodate the swingw ing movement of the rod 8. The wrench in vwithteeth or corrugations for more rmly` l other particulars is of the same construction as'that shown in Fig. l.
lt is thus seen that the applicant has produced a wrench of simple and rugged construction and one which can be inserted into a comparatively small space to reach nuts upon which an ordinary wrench cannot be used. The wrench can therefore be used in place of a socket wrench and by suitable adjustment thereof can be made to take the place of a large number of different sized socket wrenches. It'will, of course, be understood that various changes in the form and details of the device may be made withoutdeparting from the scope of the invention which, generally stated, consists in the matter shown and described and set forth in the appended claims.
Tvl/vhat is claimed is:
l. A wrench comprising a tubular body portion one side of which is projected to form a fixed jaw, a movable jaw in align- `ment with said fixed jaw and pivoted at its one end to said body portion, links pivoted to said jaws, a rod connected to said links and extending through the said tubular portion and an operating member for moving said rod and links to adjust the distance between said jaws.
2. A wrench comprising xed and movable jaws, a body portionl integrally connected to the fixed jaw, toggle link mechanism for movingsaid jaws toward and from each other and operating means for said mechanism extending through said body portion.
3. A wrench comprising a tubular body portion, a handle detachably secured at one end thereof, a fixed jaw projecting from the other end thereof, a movable jaw pivoted to Said body portion for movement toward and from said fixed jaw, toggle links at each side of said jaws and an operating rod connected to said links and extending through the said body portion.
l. A wrench comprising a tubular body portion, two jaw members carried thereby, one of which is movable, a pair of toggle links connected to said jaws and an operating rod connected at one end to both. of said links and extending through said body portion and being threaded at its other end and an operating nut engaging said rod to more the same longitudinally to adjust the distance between the said jaws.
5. A wrench comprising a tapered tubular body portion, a handle detachably secured thereto at one end and a fixed jaw projecting from the other end thereof, a hookmember formed at the last mentioned end opposite tothe fixed jaw, a movable jaw pivoted on said hook member, a toggle link mechanism connected to saidjaws at each side thereof, a rod connected at one end to said toggle mechanism and having its other end threaded and extended through said body portion and an operating nut engaging said threaded end of the rod to move the same longitudinally.
6. The structureset forth in claim t, and a handle fitted to the outer end of said tubular body portion and extending transversely normal thereto for turning said body.
7. A wrench comprising a long body portion having jaws at its lower end, a link pivotally connected to each of said jaws adjacent the end thereof, a rod secured to the inner ends of said links and extending klongitudinally throughsaid body portion, means for moving said rod longitudinally and holding the same in position to variously position said jaws, and means` on said body portion for turning the same.
8. A wrench comprising an elongated body portion having jaws at its lower end, one of which is adapted to move relatively to the other, a toggle mechanism connected to said jaws adjacent their ends for varying the distance therebetween, and means for adjusting said toggle mechanism.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
MARTIN PARKER.
