NITED STATES PATENT ,OFFICEZ.
ADOLPH COHEN AND SIMON SACKHEIM, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 65 5,295, dated August 7, 1900.
Application filed December 23,1899. Serial No. 741,438. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, ADOLPH COHEN and SIMON SACKHEIM, citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to a novel construction in a combined pipe and monkey wrench, the object being to provide a device of this character in which the jaws can be readily and quickly adjusted and held rigid; and it consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
The accompanying drawing, illustrating our invention, shows a central longitudinal section of our wrench.
Our wrench consists of a stem or handle A, provided at one end with jaws B and C, the latter being concave and serrated on one face and forming a pipe wrench jaw, and the former being plane on one face and extending at a right angle to the face D of the stem A and forming a monkey-wrench jaw. The said face D of said stem A is milled between its ends to form a rack E, the purpose of which is hereinafter fully set forth. A sleeve F is longitudinally movable on said stem A and is provided at one end with a projection G, forming a monkey-wrench jaw and extending parallel with said jaw 13 of said stem A. At its other end said sleeve F is provided with parallel lugs H, between which a lever I is pivoted, which extends practically parallel with said stem A, but has an irregular shape. Adjacent its pivotal connection with said sleeve said lever is partially hollowed out or concaved on its inner face and provided with a rack .1, between which and the rack E on said stem a toothed pinion or roller K is adapted to be held and engaged by both said racks. The said roller K is pivotally mounted between two links L, pivoted at their other ends to said lever I at a point toward the free end of said lever. The said roller is adapted to engage both said racks E and J when said lever is in the position shown in full lines,
thereby firmly'retaining said sleeve F in any desired position with relation to the jaws B and C. By turning said lever I to the position shown in dotted lines the said roller K is thrown out of engagement with one of said racks, thereby leaving the said sleeve F free to slide on said stem A. The outward movement of said lever I is limited by means of a lug M thereon, which engages the sleeve F adjacent said pivotal connection of said lever therewith. in any position to which it may be adjusted, we have provided a ring or link N, passing around said stem A and lever I, which when in the position shown in full lines holds said lever I firmly at the inner limit of its movement, the said lever I being so formed as to present a raised shoulder at its middle portion, the distance of which from the farthest side of the stem A when said lever is at the inner limit of its movement is equal to the longest inside diameter of said link N. The.
free end portion of said lever I is curved inwardly to form a concave, so that when said link is moved to the position shown in dotted lines said lever can be turned to theouter limit of its movement. Said sleeve F is provided on the side in alinement with the jaw normally held with its serrated end at the inner limit of its movement by means of a spring S, interposed between said sleeve and the thumb part of said lever. By means of the pivotal movement of said lever Q a .pipe can obviously be firmly clutched between the same and said jaw C to turn in one direction with said wrench and released by turning said wrench in the other direction.
Our device is very simple and eiiicient, be ing easily and quickly adjustable to fit any desired size of nut or pipe and firmly held in such position. It is also cheap and durable.
We claim as our invention- 1. In awrench, the combination withastem provided at one end with a jaw, and between its ends with a rack, of a sleeve movable lon In order to hold said sleeve firmly gitudinally on said stem and carrying a jaw, a lever pivotally mounted on said sleeve, a rack on said lever, and devices carried by said lever and projecting between the same and said stem and adapted to engage both said racks to hold said sleeve rigidly in any desired position on said stem.
2. In a wrench, the combination with a stem provided at one end with a jaw, and between its ends with a rack, of a sleeve movable longitudinally on said stem and carrying a jaw, a lever pivotally mounted on said sleeve, a rack on said lever, parallel links pivotally secured at one end to said lever, and a pinion pivotally mounted between the free ends of said links and adapted to engage said racks on said lever and said stem to hold said sleeve against movement.
5. In a wrench, the combination with a stem provided at one end with a jaw having a concave serrated face, and provided between its ends with a rack, of a sleeve longitudinally movable on said stem, a lever pivotally mounted on said sleeve, a rack on said lever, devices interposed between said racks on said stem and said lever and adapted to engage both the same to hold said sleeve against movement, a pivoted jaw provided with a serrated face carried by said sleeve and adapted to coact with said jaw on said stem to engage a pipe when said stem is turned in one direction and release the samewhen turned in the opposite direction, and a spring interposed between said sleeve and said jaw to hold the latter normally in engagement with a pipe.
4. In a wrench, the combination with a stem rated face carried by said sleeve and adapted to coact with said jaw on said stem to engage a pipe when said stem is turned in one direction and release the same when turned in the opposite direction, and a spring interposed between said sleeve and said jaw to hold thelatter normally in engagement with a pipe.
5. In a wrench, the combination with a stem provided at one end with a jaw, and between its ends with a rack, of a sleeve movable longitudinally on said stem and carrying a jaw, a lever pivotally mounted on said sleeve, a rack on said lever, devices carried by said lever and interposed between the same and said stem and adapted to engage said racks to hold said sleeve against movement, and devices for holding said lever at the inner limit of its movement, whereby said devices are held in engagement with said racks to so hold said sleeve rigid on said stem.
In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
