VILLIAM UANN, OF ATKINSON, ILLINOIS.
PIPE-WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 429,676, dated June 10, 1890.
Application filed February 21, 1890- Serial No. 341,255. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVILLIAM OANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atkinson, in the county of Henry and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful PipetYVrench, of which the following is a specifica- This invention has relation to pipe and rod tongs; and the objects and advantages of the invention, together with the novel features thereof, will hereinafter appear, and be particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of tongs constructed in accordance with my invention, the same being in an open position. Fig. 2 is a similar-view, the tongs closed. Fig. 3 is a detail in perspective of the bit.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
The tongs comprise two pivoted members 1 and 2, the former being the stationary member and the latter being the movable member, said members having their inner faces recessed to receive each other and pivotally connected bythe pivot 3, below which they are extended to form operating-handles 4. Beyond the pivot the member 1 is thickened and terminates at its extremity in a curved head 5, the inner edge of which is semi-octagonal, as shown at 6, and below said head said member is transversely recessed, as at 7, the bottom of the recess being preferably slightly rounded or curved, as at 8, forming a cam-surface. The opposite pivoted mem her 2 is projected laterally, as at 9, at a point beyond its pivot, and is provided with a continuation 10, which extends upward to near tlellliead 5, and at its extremity is slotted, as a 12 represents the bit, the front lower corner of which is reduced, as at 13, and mounted in the slot 11 of the extension 10, and through the walls of the slot and the reduced portion there is inserted a pivot-bolt 14. The upper edge of the bit is provided with a series of forwardly-disposed teeth 15, and the rear end of said bit is tapered in a curve-like manner, as shown at 16, and mounted in the slot 7 of the opposite member, the curved portion 16 resting upon the curved bottom 8 of the slot. To the front of the extension 10 there is secured a flat spring 17, the upper free end of which extends beyond the extension and rests against the front end of the bit 12 above the pivot 14, so that the same is held at the lower end of the slot 7 and thetwo curved faces 16 and 8 in sliding contact.
By separating the handles 4L it will be apparent that the sliding bit 12 will be withdrawn from the head 5, and the tongs may be introduced over a pipe or rod. Now by closing the handles upon or toward each other it will be apparent that the curved faces 16 and 8 will serve to raise the bit or draw the same toward the head 5, and in this mannera ready grip may be taken upon a pipe or rod and as readily loosened to procure a fresh grip in the operation of wrenching the rod.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. The combination, with the stationary member terminating at its upper end in the angular head 5 and provided below the same with a recess 7, of the opposite member pivoted, as at 3, to the stationary member, projected laterally at one side of the pivot and provided with an extension terminating short of the head of the opposite member, and the transversely-disposed bit having its front end pivoted to the extension of the pivoted member, its upper edge provided with teeth and its rear end reduced and mounted for reciprocation in the recess, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the stationary member 1, of the pivotedv member 2, each reduced at their inner faces and pivotally connected, as at 3, the stationary member being continued beyond its pivot and terminating in an angularly-recessed head provided below said head with a recess, and the opposite member extended laterally above its pivot and provided with an extension, and a transversely-disposed bit pivoted in the upper end of the said extension and reduced at its opposite end and mounted in the said recess of the opposite section, substantially as specified.
3. The section 1, having the transverse recess 7, provided with the curved bottom 8, and curved head 5, provided With a semi-octagonal recess 6, in combination with the sec-- tion 2, pivoted, as at 3, to the section 1, and projected, as at 9, to one side of its pivot and having the extension 10, slotted, as at 11, the
bit 12, reduced, as at 13, and pivoted, as at ii, within the slot, and having its upper edge toothed, as at 15, and its rear end reduced, as ablG, and mounted for sliding upon the curved bottom 8 of the recess 7, and the Hat spring 17, the lower end of which is secured to the extension 10, and the upper end of which bears against the front end of the bit, snhstantially as specified.
4. In a wrench, the stationary member having the head 5 and provided with the transverse opening having the cam-surface 8, combined with the pivoted member 2, provided my own I have hereto aiiixed my signature 20 in presence of two witnesses.
