1' Claim.
The invention relates to a wrenchand more especially to a quick adjustablepipe wrench.
The primary object of the-invention'is the provision of a wrench of this character, wherein the jaws are normally in open position to grip a pipe or other article or part to be turned and such jaws are susceptible-of a wide range of adjustment so as to accommodate either large or small work and in the adjustment of the jaws the same will firmly and positively grip the work. Another object of the invention is the 'provision of a wrench of this character, wherein one of the jaws is pivotally supported and the other jaw slidably supported, the jaws in the assembly being assured of maximum strength and susceptible of quick adjustment.
A further object of the invention is theprovision of a wrench of this character which is sim- 'ple in construction, thoroughly reliable and eifilight of weight yet strong, durable, readily andeasily adjusted with dispatch, and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of .construction, combination and arrangement of partsas will be hereinafter more fully described in detail, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which disclosethe preferred embodiment of the invention, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.

- is a latching member the range of adjustment shank-will be prevented from bei pulled out Referring to the drawings in detail, particularly Figures- 1 to 5 inclusive, the wrench in its preferred form includes a lever Ill constituting the handle of said wrench which is fitted in a frame 'll. constituting the main body of the wrench. This lever in is swingingly connected to the frame H by a pivot l2 and is limited in its swinging movement through the medium of,a strap formation l3 in the frame.
The frame H is provided with a guideway M for theshankl5 of a sliding jaw i6, while carried by the end a removable jaw ll supported upon a detachable pin iiimounted in the lever in. This jaw l1 preferably straddles the end of the lever i6 carrying said jaw and in this manner greater strength is had in the working of the jaw.
Suitably seated in the frame It and imposed upon the end of the lever in carrying the jaw II. is a coiled expansion spring I!) which urges the lever in a position to have the jaw l'l disposed relative to the jaw IS in anopening position. In other words, the wrench normally is open to receive the work between the jaws l6 and ll, these jaws at their gripping faces being serratedor roughened as at to assure a firm and positive grip upon apie'ce of work.
Theshank l5 which travels in the guideway II in the frame III at its heel edge is formed with ratchet teeth 2i and engageable with these teeth 22 pivotally connected with a trigger 23 having the finger engagingend 24 and pivotedat 25 in the frame II.- This trigger 23 is acted upon by a leaf spring 26 which normally holds the member 22 in latching position but susceptible of ratchet action with the teeth 2! inv one direction. It can be seen that this sliding jaw I6 is susceptible of a wide range of sliding adjustment. The pivotal mounting of the jaw l1 permits the same to automatically or itself become accommodated to the work when gripped by both jaws of the wrench.
- The frame I I in each opposite side cheek thereof is provided with a notch 21, while mounted in the shank l5 of the sliding jaw l6 is a cross pin 28 accommodated withinthe notch when the said jaw has been extended or is at the maximum extent of thereof and thus such of the guideway M in the frame I I. y
In Figures 6 and 7 of t e drawings there is shown a slight modification of wrench, wherein the ratchet acting latch member 29 is pivoted at 30 to a finger operated piece 3| pivoted at 32 in the frame 33 of the wrench and this finger piece serves to urge the member 29 in latching posi-,
tion with the shank of the sliding jaw of the wrench.
In Figures 8 and 9 of the drawings there is shown a further modification of the invention,
wherein the frame 36 at one side thereof is formed with an enlargement 31 in which is pivoted at 38 I the trigger 39 having pivoted thereto as at 40 the ratchet acting latching member 4|, while the shank 42 of the sliding jaw 43 at one side thereof is formed with the ratchetteeth 44 with which engages the member 4|. It will be apparent that the trigger 39 is disposed at one side of the wrench in this further modified form, while in the preferred form the trigger 23' is at the back of the wrench and in Figure 6 the finger piece 3| is between the lever and the shank of the sliding jaw of the wrench. e
In the preferred and modified forms of the wrench as disclosed in Figures 1, 6 and 9 of thedrawings it will be noted that the frame or'body has provided therein thrust bearings 45, 46 and 41 respectively, which are integral with said frame to take the strain of the latching member and also the jaw I! so as to relieve the strain from the pivot of the operating lever for. said latching member as well as thersame and the pin connecting the jaw l1. In other words, the frame constituting the body I for the latching member and this way at opposite extremities of such member constitutes a fixed rigid bearing for the latching member to assure maximum strength thereto for the gripping of the shank of the sliding jaw and more especially when the wrench is active with a piece of work.
In Figure 10 of the drawings there is shown a slight modification of .a latchin member 48 wherein the link 49 therefore has one end engaged in a pocket 50 and attached to the member through a pin 5|, this link 49 being operablefrom a trigger as hereinbefore described.
What is claimed is:
A wrench of the character described comprising outer and inner jaws; a sliding shank formed with said outer jaw, a frame fitted with said shank, a lever pivoted in the frame and carrying said inner jaw for'arcuate movement of the latter toward and away from the outer jaw, a spring fitted in said frame and working against said shank an acute angle whose apex is directed tolever to hold' the inner jaw normally outwardly inof the wrench affords a way Ward the outer jaw, the abrupt faces of the teeth 30 the ratchet member and shank engaging on outward movement of the shank.
