wanna-Pr."
To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, J OHN' D. BELANGER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chioago,in the, county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented'a certain new and useful Improvement in Wrenches and I do hereby declare that the following description of naysaid invention,
taken in connection with the accompanying sheet of drawings, forms a full, clear, and exact specification, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it. appertain t make and-use the same.
My invention relates generally. to iin provements in wrenches, anditconsists, essentially, in the novel and peculiar'combi1 nation of parts and details, of construction,
as hereinafter first fully set forth and de scribed and then pointed out in the claims.
My invention relates generally to wrenches and has for its object the construction of an adjustable wrench of a convertible type adaptable for use both as a monkey wrench and as a pipe wrench.
In the drawings already referred to which serve to illustrate my said invention more, fully, Figure 1 is an elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an elevation ofthe jaws of the wrench, taken upon the opposite side there of to Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the movable jaw of the wrench. Like parts are designated by corresponding characters or symbols of reference in all the figures of the drawings. a I
Reference being had. more particularly to the drawings, 10 indicates the wrench shank provided at its upper terminal with a transverse stationary jaw -11 and at its lower terminal with a handle 12. The body of this shank is flattened along two of its sides and provided with the threads 13 on the opposite side thereof, said threads being broken or mutilated as illustrated in Fig. 2. The threads, however, are continuous so that a nut operating thereon could, by its rotation, be caused to travel thelength of the shank 10.
A casing 14 is mounted for reciprocation upon the shank 10 and is rectangular in cross section, so that the sides of said casing rest flush against the flat or smooth sides of the shank 10. This casing is hollow and the walls thereof are pierced by the orifice Specification of Letters Patent. P t t d 17,1 15 Application filed November 27, 1914., SeIialNQ. 874,,228,
15 adjacent to the shank 10 and to the lower terminal of the easing l l, to receive the knurled nut 16 which is threadedupon the shank and rotatablymounted in the ori- 'ice 15. It will be seen that as the nut 16 is rotated upon the shank 10 the threaded engage t hereof Wit t rea 13 of said shank will causethecasing 14; to be moved to and f n'th ea dep ndent upon the direction of the rotation of'the nut 6.. r U i Almovahl jaw 17 pivote in he pp end; o the casing 1 by means f t ns verse .extensionz lS formed thereon which extends into the casing 14 and pierced y a pin 9.. This pin 191s ar a g a i in close proximity to the shank 10 and acts into a sq e fa ed or monk y Wren it is e e sary to swing the jaw 17 above its pivotal point against the action of the spring of housing 1, a ong the sh nk'lt whi h ZQ-to assume the position illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 2, in'which position the Jew 7 res s parallel to he ja 11 ns ead I of at an acute angle thereto. To accomplish this the face of the casing 14 is pierced by a longitudinal slot 21 in which reciprocates a stem or button 22. This stem or button carries a stem or slide 23, the upper terminal of which is provided with a cam surface 2 1. When the slide is in'the position illus-- trated in full lines 22 the aw 17 assumes a position, under the influence of the spring 20, at an acute angle to the jaw 11. If on the contrary, however, the slide 23 is reciprocated vertically to the position illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 2 the cam surface 24: thereof contacts with the extension 18 of the jaw 17, and swings the same about its pivot 1 This causes the extension 18 to rest parallel to the casing 14 and the jaw 17 torest parallel with the jaw 11. lhe slide is of such proportion that when it is elevated it rests flush against both the extensions 18 and the adjacent face of the casing 1a, and is frictionally held in this position.
The upper edge of the casing adjacent to the jaw 17 is provided on each side thereof with the upwardly projecting guiding sur faces 25, which cooperate with the curved guides 26 formed one'ach side of the jaw 17. As the jaw 17 swings to, its adjusted positions the guides 26 thereof operate on the projections and insure stability to the entire structure.
While herein I have described-the preerred method of practising my invention, I may make changes in details thereon without departing from the spirit or scope of my inventiom Having thus fully described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure to my self by I Letters Patent of. the United Statesz- 'x p f 1. A wrench including a shank possessed of'a stationary jaw at one end, a hollow,
movable casing embracing said shank, the forward edges of sald casing on each side of said shank being of vertical arcuate contour,
5 the-top of said casing at the front edge thereof being likewise arcuate and a continuation of said arcuate edges, a aw pivoted within said casing possessing depending side wings embracing said shank along its sides thereof, said wings being arcuate on theirrear vertical edges, engaging the arcuateedges of said casing, there being an arcuate face on the rear of said jaw contactingwith the upper arcuate edge of said casing, and a leaf spring constructed to normally maintain said jaw against the said upper edge of said casing.
2. A wrenchincluding a shank possessed of a stationary jaw at one end, a hollow, movable cas ng embracing said shank, the forward edges of said casing on each side Copies of this patent may be obtained for of said shank being of vertically arcuate contour, the top of said casing at the front edge thereof being likewise arcuate and a continuation of said arcuate edges, a jaw pivoted within said casing possessing de pending side wings embracing said shank along its sides thereof, said wings being arcuate on their rear vertical edges, engaging the arcuate edges of said casing, there being an arcuate face on the rear of said jaw contacting with the upper arcuate edge of said casing, and a leaf spring constructed to normally maintain said jaw against the said upper edge of said casing, and slidable means in said casing adapted to enforce downward movement of said pivoted aw. i
3. A wrench including a shank possessed of a stationary jaw at one end, a hollow, movable casing embracing said shank, the forward edges of said casing on each side of said shank being of vertical arcuate icontour, the top of said casing at the frontedge thereof being likewise arcuate and a continuation of said arcuate edges, a jaw pivoted within said casing possessing depending side wings embracing said shank along its sides thereof, said wings being arcuate on their rear vertical edges, engaging the arcuate edges of said casing, there being an arcuate face on the rear of said jaw contacting with the upper arcuate edge of said casing, and a leaf spring constructed to normally maintain said jaw against the said upper edge of said casing, and slidable means in said casing adapted to enforce downward movement of said pivoted jaw, said means including a slidable bar located within said casing contiguous with the upper, inner face thereof, there being a longitudinal slotted opening through the top of said casing, a pin passing through said slot and engaging said slidable member, and means on said pin preventing its dropping through said slot.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN D. BELANGER. In the presence of MARTIN NELSON, C. S. STARK.
