Description

w B. CARPENTER. Lamp Extinguisher.
. Patented Sept. 9.1856.
fiwevifiv; W ii M UNITED STATESPATENT OFFICE.
W. B. CARPENTER, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
EXTINGUISHER FOR FLUID-LAMPS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 15,686, dated September 9, 1856.
To all whom z'tmay concern:
Be it known t-hatI, WM. B. CARPENTER, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Constructing Extinguishers for Spirit or Fluid Lamps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, like letters referring to like parts.
The nature of my invention consists in providing the tubes of spirit lamps with extinguishers that need not be removed from the said tubes when the lamp is lighted.
My extinguisher is divided in two halves, each half is connected to a spring, which at its lower part is connected to a ring. Said ring may slide upward and downward upon the lamp tube; by sliding the extinguisher downward it opens, and the lamp may be lighted, by sliding it upward it closes and extinguishes the flame.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, like letters referring to like parts.
Figure 1 represents the two halves of the extinguisher marked A A distended upon the lamp tube marked B and held securely upon the tube B by the springs marked D, D, the lower part of the springs D, D, is connected to the ring marked, a, which ring is free to slide upward and downward upon the tube B. The tube B Fig. 1 is represented with a flame at its top. Now, by sliding the springs D, D, and the ring, 0, may be cut out in a press in one piece of metal; the
part marked A A is then to be pressed to its proper shape, the spring D, D, is then to be suitably bent at or near the ring, 0, until it assumes the shape, and functions, as shown in either Figs. 1 or 2.
The advantages of this kind of extinguisher are 1st its proper place is always on the lamp tube. 2d it dispenses with the chain with which, usually, the common extinguishers are connected to the lamp. 3d when a lamp with the common extinguisher is carried in the hand the jingling of the chain is often annoying; this is avoided in my invention.
\Vhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The divided cap or extinguisher A A in combination with the springs D, D, and the ring, a, the whole for the purpose, and operating, substantially as herein described.
WM. B. CARPENTER.
