UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVED CARTRIDGE-OPENER.
Specification forming To aZZ whom it may concern:
1 Be it known that we, JEssE S. BTITTER- FIELD and SIMEON MARsHALL, of the city and county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved mode of opening a gun-cartridge by means of a spring-toothed jaw or cutoff, acting in connection with the gun-barrel; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of our invention consists in forming the spring-toothed jaw or cut-off, Figure 3, connected to the upper band, Fig. 2, or convenient to the muzzle of the gun, arranged and operated in such a manner that a person may open the cartridge with less exertion and without that distress produced by thirst or disease of the mouth resulting from the pres ent method.
. The cut-off, Fig. 3, is constructed of metal,
thumb-piece B, toothed jaw 0, spring D, and dovetail E. The dovetail and steady-pin are arranged and operated in the forthe purpose of securing the cut-off, Fig. 3, in its place, as seen in Fig. 1.
The mode of operation is substantially as follows: The gun being brought to the left side in a position for loading, it is supported by the left part of Letters Patent No. 14,850, dated May 13, 1856.
hand, the thumb of which rests upon the thumbpiece B, the cartridge being held firmly in the right hand, with the part to be cut off extending over and beyond the forefinger, as seen in Fig. 1,which finger rests against the gun-barrel while the hand is passed upward until that part to be removed comes beneath the toothed jaw O, the thumb-piece being pressed firmly by the thumb of the left hand. The right hand is now caused to makea quarter-revolutiou toward the left shoulder and upward, which movement leaves the part cut off beneath the toothed jaw and brings the cartridge directly to the muzzle of the gun, to be placed therein. The thumb-piece B being relieved, the spring D throws the jaw 0 open, relieving it of the piece and placing it in a position to receive another cartridge.
WVe claim The combination of a steady-pin, thumbpiece, toothed jaw, and spring, or their equivalents, attached to the upper band of the gun, manner and for the purpose substantially as herein set forth.
