Description
a UNITED sTATns PATENT ornion.
i LOUIS SCHINGRUBER,` OF NEW YORK,` N. Y.
SHOE-HORN.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 11,445, dated August 1, 1854.
To all whom t may concern j Be it known that I, LOUIS SGHWINGROU- BER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented and made a new and useful Improvement in Slips for` Putting on Shoes; and I dohereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and exact description of the Construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making partofthis specification, whereini Figures l and 2 Vare perspectivel views of the spring slip complete. Fig. 3, represents the same as opened ready for use. Figs. 4 and 5 represent the `separate parts `of the spring and slip. Figs. 6, 7, 8 and 9 represent the separate parts as t-hey are out o-ut `or stamped ready to be bent into the required shapeby dies or similar means, and Fig. l0 shows the spring slip as in use. `The like marks ofreferenoe denote the same parts.
The nature of mysaid invention consists in the use of a spring clamp in combination with the shoe slip by means of which the back of the shoe is securely held while being pulled onto the. foot, and the metallic slip guides the heel down into place the same as an ordinary shoe horn or slip.
a, `is a metallic plate. I prefer brass,
stamped or eut out nearly in the shape of that shown in Fig. 6, the ears 3, 3, of which are turned up, and the part 1 formed con- Cave as shown, and the part 2 forms a place to take hold of. Through the ears 3 I .insert a pin 4, that forms a fulerum Vfor a spring clamp b, the metal for which is out out in the shape shown in Fig. 9, or nearly so, and onto this clamp I rivet a hinge piece 5, which surrounds the wire 4, and forms `a fulerum for said spring clamp. The end7 of the spring `clamp b is made concave to correspond with the part l of the slip a, and the end 6 is turned back and takes against the plate a, toward the fulerum 4. When this spring is to be used, the part 8 is to be pressed toward the part 2, which opens t-he jaws 7 and l, into which the back `part of the shoe is to be inserted, as seen in lITig. 10, and the spring allowed to clamp and hold the shoe, while being drawn on, by taking hold of the part 2 of the slip a.
This improvement is more especially useful for the shoes of ladies and children than for any others.
I am aware that spring clamps of various `kinds have been used, but I :am not aware that a spring clamp Z), formed in the manner herein shown has been used with the shoe slip a, as set forth therefore Vhat I desire to secure by Let-ters Patent isl I claim the spring clamp Z), withiits oonoave holding jaw 7, in combination with the shoe slip a, the parts being constructed and operating substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my signature this fth day of July, one thousand eight hundred and fifty-four.

LEMUEL W. TERRELL, THOMAS G. HAROLD.
