Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HOWARD PERKINS, OF SGUTH BRIDGEWATER, MASSACHUSETTS.
CARPENTERS BRACE AND BIT-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent No.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, HOWARD PERKINS, of South Bridgewater, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bits and Bitstocks; and I hereby declare the following to be a clear and full description thereof, reference being had to the drawings herewith presented, which drawings constitute a part of said description.
The nature of my improvement consists in a new mode of fastening the bit into the socket by a slide key as described in the drawing.
Figure l is a representation of the bitstock showing the key (le) by the dotted lines through the socket. The form of the key is better seen at Fig. 3. The head of the bit is shown at Fig. 2.
It may be observed that a recess is formed in the key at (o) by which the head of the bit enters into a groove in the key and by shoving forward the key the wedge formed part at (fw) enters the notch in the head of the bit, binding it fast, and at the same time the end of the bit rests against the side (B) of the key, so that the bit cannot be crowded 10,189, dated November 1, 1853.
in to the socket so as to remain tight after the key is slipped back.
The advantage of this kind of lock will be obvious to those accustomed to using the bitstock, it being much more firm and substantial than the common spring-catch and itcannot be drawn out without first sliding back the key. As this lock is applicable to all common bitstocks it will be unnecessary to describe them here.
That I claim as my improvement and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The manner of constructing and fastening the bit into the socket by the slide lock as before described having the end of the bit so formed as to fit into the groove in the key as set forth and having the end of the bit press down upon the key so that'when the key is slipped back the bitmay be easily removed.
In testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name in presence of two witnesses.
I-IOIVARD PERKINS.
lVitnesses ARTEMAS HALE, DAVID PERKINS.
